3. The Graduation Program: A Quick Review…
In order to graduate with a Dogwood in British Columbia a student must earn a total of 80 credits:
48 credits in required “core” courses (English 12 in grade 12)
28 credits in elective courses (all other courses including 3 courses at the grade 12 level credits )
4 credits in Graduation Transitions (Assignment distributed during our first assembly and is available on out school website)
Students must also earn a total of 30 hours of work and/or volunteer experience
150 minutes per week of documented Physical Activity

Colleges
Colleges offer diploma and certificate programs which usually are two years in length. These programs allow students to become employment ready in a specific area of work.
Colleges also offer university transfer programs which allow for complete their first two years of university at college and then transfer to a university to complete third and fourth year.
College admission is a non-competitive entry (with a few exceptions) which means students gain entry into college by successfully graduating.

 Universities
Entrance to universities is competitive which means they will look at marks in admissible courses to make offers. Generally, to apply to Canadian universities you will need to consider the following:
Admission Average of Marks (En other admissible courses)
Language Credits (UBC and SFU require a language 11)
Math Credits (most universities minimally require Pre-calc. 11)
Broad-based Admission Process (supplemental applications)

Admissible Courses
Students make sure they have and or are registered in the courses that are required (grade 11 and 12) for admission to their program of choice at their post-secondary institution of choice.
These admissible courses are the courses institutions track and therefore become “required.”
Most program requirements will state their required admissible courses plus two or three other “approved courses.” Each institution has their own list of “approved grade 12 courses from BC.”
English 12 is an admission requirement for virtually every university program . Most schools will take a blended mark of the school mark and provincial mark, some may have penalties if there is too much of a difference between the school mark and the provincial mark.

Broad Based Admissions Process More universities are considering a greater range of information in their admissions decisions such as: leadership activities, volunteering, community work, and references. This is a great way for students to highlight their involvement at school and within the community. This may include volunteering, work experience, involvement in athletics, the arts, or virtually any other extra-curricular pursuit. *UBC has moved to a Broad Based Admissions Process for anyone applying for admissions.

You can apply at BC Post-Secondary Application Service. (ApplyBC) for BC post-secondary member institutions.
Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) for Ontario post-secondary member institutions

Time to Apply!
Check the key dates and deadlines for your post-secondary application. Put these dates on your calendar.
Submit your post-secondary application and all required documents well in advance of deadlines.
Apply to several post-secondary institutions to have a back-up plan and apply for residence if needed.
Attend the post-secondary information sessions held at school and other public locations.

Time to Apply!
October 1: Langara College starts accepting applications for the September 2018 intake. This includes the university transfer programs offered by colleges.
Many BC colleges use the application date to determine the timing of admission decisions and assign priority registration to admitted students.
Apply early to gain advantage in the registration process.

14. The Grade 12 Year at a Glance: October- November 2017
November 1: It is the usual early decision application deadline for some US post-secondary institutions.
Students are checking their accounts or accounts they have set up as part of the registration process regularly to provide PSI’s with further information.
Register for the Student Transcript Service and complete the online PSI Choices Form at the Student Transcript Service. I will be giving out registration information to students via .
Continue to attend the post-secondary information sessions held at school and in the community.

15. The Grade 12 Year at a Glance: December 2017
December 1st: It is the UBC application deadline for students wishing to be considered for early admission offers and major entrance scholarships.
SFU’s online portal for the self-reporting of grades usually opens from mid December to the end of April at

16. The Grade 12 Year at a Glance: January- February 2018
Submit transcript information with term 1 marks as required by the PSIs to which you have applied in the early application round. Most Ontario post-secondary institutions accept scanned copies transcripts for students to report electronically.
January 15: It is the UBC application deadline for the September 2018 intake.
January 31: It is the date by which you must 100% complete the courses you are taking through distributed learning (online, distance learning) if you want to use the course marks in the calculation of your competitive admission average for undergraduate admission to UBC.
February 28: It is the SFU application deadline for early admission and major entrance scholarships.

17. The Grade 12 Year at a Glance: March 2018
UBC’s online portal for the self-reporting of grades usually opens from March to the end of April. Self-reporting is mandatory for UBC.
Most BC post-secondary institutions allow students to self-report their grades.
Most Canadian post-secondary institutions start issuing conditional offers of admission and scholarship. Some of the conditions attached to such offers require maintaining a certain level of academic standing.

18. The Grade 12 Year at a Glance: April- May 2018
May 1: the deadline for completing the online PSI Choices Form to have interim transcript information (term 2) forwarded to PSIs in May. Check the Online PSI Choices Instructions website for the 2018 deadline.
Post-secondary institutions continue to issue conditional offers of admission. Check your PSI account regularly for more information regarding the status of your application.
Students respond to an offers of admission as instructed. Accepting an offer usually requires you to pay a non-refundable confirmation deposit.

Follow up with PSI offers of acceptance and take care of any other registration information.
Attend course planning/registration sessions offered by post-secondary institutions.
Take English 12 provincial exam (Monday, June 25, 9-11 am) to meet the graduation requirements. Note: the exam is worth 40% of a final mark.
