An Introduction to General Guidelines, Expectations and Deadlines for the Extended Essay 2018 cohort

2 The Extended Essay What is it? Independent, academic, research paper
What’s the purpose? Experience in working within formal guidelines, independent interests and intelectual risk-taking Basic details? 4000 words, about 40 hrs, externally assessed, with ToK can add up to 3 points to IB diploma

3 Extended Essay Supervisor
Four main responsibilities To encourage and support the student throughout the research and writing of the extended essay To provide the student with advice and guidance in the skills of undertaking research To ensure the extended essay is the candidate’s own work To complete the Supervisor’s report

4 Extended Essay Supervisor
Will Provide advice and guidance in the skills of undertaking research Encourage and support Discusses the choice of topic and, in particular, help formulate a well-focused research question Read and comment on one draft only Monitor the progress of the EE to offer guidance Read the final version to confirm its authenticity Complete the supervisor’s report and submit a predicted grade

Will not Get the student started and tell them what to do Provide a research question Give resources Edit work Remind students of deadlines Chase the students

6 Responsibilities of the DP student
Follow the established timeline. Speak frequently with EE supervisor. Inform DPC immediately if there is a problem. Be honest and forthright in communicating with the DPC and EE supervisor. Post everything on Managebac EE page or OneNote shared with supervisor and DPC. Read and respond, as needed, to all from the DPC and supervisor. Attend all meetings promptly, ready to work.

7 Timeline - students January – choose subject area, attend lunch meetings, supervisor assigned and met February – meet with supervisor, narrow topic, draft outline, background research March – check in with supervisor, start drafting background paragraphs if appropriate, 24-25th EE workdays (G4) April – finalize outline, continue research May – rough draft ( intro, body, works cited) to be submitted before end of school June – after exams EE workdays if needed, G4 presentations

8 Timeline - students Summer
Write full complete draft of essay including conclusion, abstract and all other parts. August Give final draft to supervisor to read and comment on. September Get final feedback from supervisor, do final revisions October Submit final version
