7 Successes After 3 Years of Implementation
“One student that reported severe substance abuse (alcohol) engaged in conversation about his use and has worked with his Case Manager to change this behavior. The student has cut down on alcohol consumption and no longer uses alcohol on "school days." As a result, the student now regularly attends school, has caught up on all assignments, and is actively seeking employment.” “Out of 14 youth who successfully completed the program, 13 participated in brief interventions at some point during the quarter. Each youth was willing to talk about his substance use openly and embraced receiving substance abuse information, participated in counseling, and participated in a substance abuse evaluation or received treatment.” “One student who joined the program with a self proclaimed need to smoke marijuana multiple times daily to help with an assortment of issues ended the program with three months of negative drug screens. Upon program completion he was offered a distribution center job (that required a clean drug screen) where he now makes 15.00/hr with the chance to get to 19.00/hr by the end of his 6 month probation period. I attribute the MI process to getting him to the point that he made his own choice to get clean, along with is own action plan to achieve his goals.”

8 Implementation Challenges
Staffing at programs- high staff transition requires on-going basic and advanced training Managing issues with the normalization of marijuana use Communicating to youth that though it is “legal” there are still consequences Successful placement in the workforce, especially in “legal” states
