1 Microsoft Office In Schools
By Anne Cutsinger, March 5, 2005

2 Microsoft Office in Education
Provides opportunities Easy to use and teach Various programs work well together Students express themselves and communicate their ideas

3 Microsoft Powerpoint Students love working with color and animation
Students are inspired to create visual presentations Student work can be posted to the web easily

4 Using PowerPoint in Instruction
Introducing a new topic Direct Instruction Guided Questions Examples : Order of Operations 1 Order of Operations 2

5 Microsoft Front Page (formerly part of the Microsoft Office Suite)
Mexican American Jeopardy Ms. Cutsinger’s Math Class

6 Order of Operations Using Integers

7 “Operators” & “Terms”…
12 • • -6 Terms Operators

8 What do we do first???? It Matters!!!! -5 + 7 • 10 = -5 + 7 • 10
2 • 10 20 • 10 65 It Matters!!!!

9 The Order of Operations
All of Algebra is Based on… The Order of Operations 1. Parenthesis 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication & Division (left to right) 4. Addition & Subtraction (left to right) 5. Simplify any Fraction

10 What do we do first???? 5 + 7 • 10 = 5 + 7 • 10 12 • 10 120 5 + 7 • 10
5 + 70 75 5 + 7 • 10 5 + 70 75

11 The Order of Operations
Memorize These 1. Parenthesis 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication & Division (left to right) 4. Addition & Subtraction (left to right) 5. Simplify any Fraction

12 Example 1 -2 -2 + 6(-8 + 5) -20 42 - 6 10 -2 + 6(-3) 42 - 6 -2 + 6(-3)
Holy Mackerel -2 + 6(-3) 42 - 6 -2 -2 + 6(-3) 16 - 6 16 - 6

13 Example 2 12 • • -6 -42

14 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions
(2a) b2 Evaluate when a = -2, b = 4 (2•-2) •42 (-4) (4)2 (16) 16 + (-48) -32

15 More “Placeholders” x2 - 2y2 + y Evaluate when x=7, y=-3
(-3)2 + -3 (9) + -3 28

16 Variables can “Vary” x2 - 2y2 + y Evaluate when x = -5, y = -2
(-5) (-2)2 + -2 (4) + -2 15

17 2 only has power over the a (not the negative sign)
Looks Easy BUT… 2 only has power over the a (not the negative sign) Evaluate when a = -2 -a2

18 Try some on your own...
