1 The concept of stress, strain, elastic modulus, plastic modulus, tensile strength and energy as demonstrated by a tensile stress applied to a given structure. The tensile strain is the change in length under a stress divided by the original length. This concept is applicable to compressive and shear strain. In the stress/strain relationship the elastic modulus is the portion of the curve where permanent deformation does not occur as opposed to the plastic modulus where it does fracture or tearing occurs at the tensile strength.
