1 Properties Quiz on Thursday!
REMINDER!!! Properties Quiz on Thursday!

2 Solve Linear Equations
Section 1.3: Solve Linear Equations

3 Equation – a statement that two expressions are equal
Equation – a statement that two expressions are equal. A linear equation in one variable is an equation that can be written in the form ax + b = 0 where a and b are constants and a ≠ 0.

4 A number is a solution of an equation in one variable if substituting the number for the variable results in a true statement. Two equations are equivalent equations if they have the same solution(s).

5 Transformations That Produce Equivalent Equations
Addition Property of Equality Add the same number to each side. If a = b, then a + c = b + c. Subtraction Property of Equality Subtract the same number from each side. If a = b, then a – c = b – c. Multiplication Property of Equality Multiply each side by the same nonzero number. If a = b, then a∙ c = b ∙ c. Division Property of Equality Divide each side by the same nonzero number. If a = b and c ≠ 0, then a ÷ c = b ÷ c.

6 Example 1: Solve. x = 18

7 Example 2: Your total cost for a book, including 6% sales tax, is $23
Example 2: Your total cost for a book, including 6% sales tax, is $ What was the price of the book before the sales tax was added? $22.00

8 Example 3: Solve. 8y – 16 = 13y + 9 y = -5

9 Example 4: Solve. 4(2x – 9) + 5x = -3(10 – x) x = 3/5

10 Example 5: It takes you 45 minutes to mow your lawn and it takes your brother 30 minutes to mow the lawn. How long does it take you to mow the lawn if you have two mowers and work together? 18 minutes

11 HOMEWORK pg. 21 – 22; 26 – 40 even
