2 Laboratory Safety Dress Code General Safety First Aid

3 Dress Code Tie back long hair. Roll up long sleeves.
Wear an apron during every experiment. Wear goggles when working with chemicals, glassware, flames, or sharp instruments.

4 General Rules Read lab procedures carefully and listen carefully to your teacher’s instructions before beginning a lab. Keep work area clean and organized. Be sure you have no backpacks or unnecessary books. Do not eat or drink in the laboratory. Do not engage in horseplay.

5 First Aid Report all injuries (even minor ones) and first aid needs to the teacher immediately. Know where first-aid kit is located in the classroom. Know where the emergency shower and eye-wash station are. Know where fire extinguisher is in the room.

6 First Aid Continued Know how to call in case of emergency. From the phone in my office: Dial for Emergencies Dial 2739 for the School Nurse (Nurse Stevenson)

7 Heating and Fire Safety
Always wear goggles when using a heat source. Never reach across a flame. Don’t pick a container that has recently been heated with your bare hands. Use an oven mitt or clamp. Never heat a closed container.

8 Electrical Safety Make sure equipment is off before you plug in or unplug electrical equipment. Your hands must be dry before you plug in or unplug electrical equipment. Do not stretch a cord across an area where a person could trip.

9 Chemical Safety Dispose of all chemicals as instructed by your teacher. Do not return chemicals to their original containers. If a chemical spills, tell your teacher immediately. Then wash the area with water. Do not smell, touch or mix chemicals unless you are instructed to do so. If you are instructed to mix chemicals, smell with a wafting motion.

10 Glassware Safety If glassware breaks notify your teacher immediately. Ask your teacher to dispose of the broken glassware in the Glassware/Sharps Disposal Box. Never eat or drink out of glassware.

11 Sharp Instrument Safety
Use scalpels carefully. Always cut away from you, not towards you. Always cut an object that is in a dissection pan, not on another surface or in your hand. Let you teacher know immediately if you cut your skin.

12 Animal and Plant Safety
Avoid touching any poisonous plants and fungi. Poison Ivy Poison oak Poison Sumac

13 Animal and Plant Safety Continued
Wear long pants in the field and close-toed shoes. Wash your hands after touching any plants or animals.

14 End of Lab Procedures Always clean up your workspace at the end of a lab period. Return any equipment to its place. Unplug all electrical equipment. Ask your teacher how to dispose of all waste materials. Wash your hands.
