1 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Vocabulary
The Law of Conservation of Matter – matter cannot be created nor destroyed, but may change form.

2 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Vocabulary
Precipitate– a solid formed by the reaction of two solutions. Supernatant Liquid– liquid layer above the precipitate after it settles. Decant– to pour off the liquid layer while retaining the solid.

3 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Vocabulary
Filter- to separate the parts of a mixture by mechanical means (as with filter paper). Filtrate– liquid which has passed through the filter.

4 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Lab SKILL
How to Prepare a Filter Make a cone out of a circle by FOLDING not by cutting the circle. STEP 1

5 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Lab SKILL
How to Prepare a Filter Make a cone out of a circle by FOLDING not by cutting the circle. STEP 2

6 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Lab SKILL
How to Prepare a Filter Make a cone out of a circle by FOLDING not by cutting the circle. STEP 3 3 LAYERS 1 LAYER

7 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Lab SKILL
Setup for Heating & Filtering Set small iron ring about 6” above the table and the large ring 3”-5” higher than your Bunsen burner.

8 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Lab SKILL
Setup for Heating & Filtering Light burner out from under the ring stand, then slide it under the stand. Do NOT adjust ring height with beaker sitting on the stand.

9 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Lab SKILL
Day Two – Finishing the Lab Why did some groups have a clear filtrate and others, a yellow filtrate? Stoichiometric Amounts – everything is in proper proportion, there are no leftovers. 3 Scenarios A = B A > B A < B

10 Investigating the law of conservation of matter Lab SKILL
Day Two – Finishing the Lab Mass both beakers Clean up (Dispose of filter paper and compound C in the designated container, Compound D can be rinsed down the drain.) Begin working on lab report
