Northern & Southern democrats disagreed about slavery in the parties platform. Platform – statement of beliefs N. Democrats nominated Douglas S. Democrats nominated John Breckinridge Republicans nominated Lincoln.

3 What do you think? Since there were two Democratic candidates, how do you think the election came out? Please write your answer in your notes.

4 The Election of 1860 Lincoln beat Douglas in the North
Breckinridge won in the South The North had more people, so Lincoln won The South did NOT trust Lincoln Saw him as a threat to the Southern way of life

5 Southern States Secede
Secede- Withdraw from the Union December 20, 1860 South Carolina seceded from the Union 6 Southern states followed Believed each state had voluntarily joined the Union, so they could leave the union. February 1861 they formed the Confederate States of America Jefferson Davis was president

6 Union responds to secession
Northerners felt seceding was unconstitutional Thought secession would weaken the Union

7 Efforts to Compromise Fail
In Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address, he assured the South he wouldn’t abolish slavery there. Lincoln took Presidency and tried to appeal to the South through friendship
