2 Who is learning ESOL? Refugees Asylum seekers
Recently arrived immigrants European Union (workers) Long term UK residents. Huge range in ESOL classes in terms of educational background, life experience and motivations for learning. In one class you might find a doctor, a factory worker and a stay-at-home Mum.

3 Where are they learning ESOL?
Further Education colleges (also ‘outreach centres’ – ‘in the community’) Adult Education centres Schools (Family Learning) Private institutions.

4 What are they learning? ESOL curriculum in dedicated ESOL classes.
Five levels: Entry 1,2 and 3. Level 1 and 2 (level 2 is GCSE equivalent). ESOL embedded in content curriculum (e.g. engineering, childcare, beauty therapy).

5 Who is funding? UK government through ‘Skills for Life’ (DfES)
Who is teaching the students? Teachers with a generic PGCE/Cert Ed. in PCET (Post-compulsory education and training) and an ESOL Certificate at Level 4. Or: Teachers with an integrated PGCE in PCET/ESOL.

6 TASKS 1. Look at the table that shows what students need to know/be able to do at different levels in listening. Some sections have been removed. Replace the sections. Look at the texts used with students of ESOL. What level do you think this work is set at? 3. Imagine you are a teacher working with these texts. Choose one and design two activities that you feel would be suitable to help students either to understand these texts or to produce similar texts.
