1 A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY
APPLICATION OF APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY IN BANGLADESH A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY Total Quality Management Short Course Organized By: Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre and JICA 25 January, 2011 Shams Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Secretary (Water Supply), Local Government Division, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and Santanu Lahiri, Senior Decentralization Specialist, Water and Sanitation Program of the World Bank

2 WHAT IS APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY?
In the early 1980s “AI” was officially started by David Cooperrider and his project supervisor, Suresh Srivastva. As per David Cooperrider, “AI is the discovery for the best in people, their organizations, and the relevant world around them. It is an art and practice of asking the unconditional positive questions that strengthen a system’s capacity to apprehend, anticipate and heighten positive potential. Instead of negation, criticism and spiralling diagnosis, there is discovery, dream, design and destiny. It works from accounts of the ‘positive change core’. AI links the energy of the positive core directly to any change agenda and changes never thought possible are suddenly and democratically mobilized.”

3 6 ASSUMPTIONS OF APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY
In every human situation something works What we focus on becomes our reality Reality is created in the moment and there are multiple realities The language we use shapes our reality The act of asking questions influences the outcome in some way People have more confidence going into the future (unknown) when they carry forward parts of the present (known) From: The Thin Book of Appreciative Inquiry, by Sue Annis Hammond

4 The “4-D Cycle” APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY PROCESS Discover Deliver Dream
“What gives life?” (The best of what is) Appreciating Deliver “How to empower, learn, and adjust/improvise?” Sustaining Dream “What might be?” (What is the world calling for) Envisioning Results Affirmative Topic Choice Design “What should be - the ideal?” Co-constructing

6 APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY & HORIZONTAL LEARNING
Under Horizontal Learning Program, the same AI assumptions have been applied but the process is slightly different. Identify best practices Replicate through holding hands Validate best practices HORIZONTAL LEARNING PROCESS Discuss with citizens and integrate into the ADP Learn via Appreciative inquiry Prioritize practices to replicate

7 APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY & HORIZONTAL LEARNING
The Horizontal Learning process places a different emphasis on the same AI principles for enriching human potential. Appreciate: Enriching human consciousness through looking for the best in others and framing our focus and our language on the positive. Connect: Enriching compassion by connecting with others through intuition, questioning and self positioning (Newton’s 3rd Law). Practice: Enriching creativity through action to “know” by focusing on the real. Sponsoring innovation and finding joy through practice. Talk about the bundling of the AI principles …..
