Characterization: The techniques an author uses to represent a character as a real person Character Trait: A distinguishing feature of an individual ALL ABOUT VOCABULARY & PRECISION OF LANGUAGE

3 In your own words… Rewrite the definitions from the previous slide in simpler terms. Characterization Character Trait

4 Types of characterization
DIRECT: The specifically author tells you what a character is like. The traits are given EXAMPLE: Juan Pablo was a very nosey boy.

5 Types of characterization
INDIRECT: The author shows you what the character is like through: What the character does, thinks, and says How the character looks (sometimes) What others think and say about the character The traits must be inferred EXAMPLE: Juan Pablo was always trying to listen in on people’s conversations to get the latest gossip.

6 Now you try! Write one example of direct characterization
THEN, write one example of indirect characterization for the same character and same trait.

7 Types of characters Protagonist: main character or hero
Antagonist: character that creates conflict/is in opposition to main character Minor characters: have relationship to main character

9 Types of characters Dynamic (round) Character:
A character whose traits change and develop throughout story

10 Types of characters Static (flat) Character:
A character whose traits remain the same throughout the story
