September 11th (2001) America falls victim to the largest ever terrorist attack on American soil. 4 planes are hijacked with two crashing into the world trade center. One plane crashes into the pentagon while the last plane crashes in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people died including 343 firefighters and 23 policemen. The attackers were Islamic terrorists. Why do you think terrorism is so hard to fight? Explain your answer.

September 12th (1793) Maryland forbids commerce with Philadelphia during an outbreak of yellow fever. It was the first quarantine of an American city. Why would it be hard to quarantine a city in today’s world? Why do you think we haven’t had any major outbreaks in recent years? Explain your answers.

September 13th (1900) While in Cuba conducting experiments on how yellow fever is spread, physician Jesse Lazear is bitten by a mosquito carrying the disease. He would die two weeks later confirming how the disease is spread. What do you think was the greatest medical breakthrough in history? Explain your answer.

September 14th (1901) U.S President William McKinley dies from the wounds of an assassins gunshot. 42 year old vice-president Teddy Roosevelt takes office. Name as many presidents as you can that have been assassinated (Hint: there have been four).

September 15th (1963) The KKK bombs a black church in Birmingham, Alabama killing four girls. The tragedy helped mobilize support for the civil rights movement. The four suspects identified in the case would not be tried for the crime until years later. Why do you think this crime backfired against the KKK?
