1 Compound Probability

2 Compound Probability Probability that includes 2 or more events such as flipping a coin AND rolling a dice. Probability that includes combining things together Compound probability can include events that are dependent on each other or independent of each other. Compound probability can be with theoretical events or experimental events

3 Theoretical Compound probability

4 If you choose one item from each column for a meal
If you choose one item from each column for a meal. What is the probability of getting a meal with beef?

5 If you choose one item from each column for a meal
If you choose one item from each column for a meal. What is the probability of getting a meal with beef? Think of your tree diagram starting with beef. Beef – Carrots – soup Beef - carrots – salad Beef – peas – soup Beef – peas – salad Beef – asparagus – soup Beef – asparagus – salad Beef - potato – soup Beef – potato - salad 8 choices

6 If you choose one item from each column for a meal
If you choose one item from each column for a meal. What is the probability of getting a meal with beef? 8 choices Now use your counting principle to figure out the total outcomes 4 x 4 x 2 = 32 total outcomes

9 What is the probability of rolling a combination of a 7 when rolling 2 dice?

10 What is the probability of rolling a combination of a 7 when rolling 2 dice?
Make a table add 1 2 3 4 5 6

11 Jack rolled a pair of dice
Jack rolled a pair of dice. What is the probability of getting an odd number (when added)?

12 Independent compound probability
You flip a coin and toss a 1-6 number cube (dice). P(not tails and not a 3) Each of these things are independent of the other.

13 Independent compound probability
You flip a coin and toss a 1-6 number cube (dice). P(not tails and not a 3) Each of these things are independent of the other. Not tails = Not 3 x =

14 You roll a number cube numbered from 1 to 6
You roll a number cube numbered from 1 to 6. You then spin a spinner with 4 sections each with a different color. The spinner has the colors pink, red, white, and gray. P(white and 2)

15 You roll a dice 2 times. What is the probability of getting an even number both times.

16 You have 20 marbles in a bag. 8 are red and 6 are black
You have 20 marbles in a bag. 8 are red and 6 are black. What is the probability of drawing a red marble the first time and a black marble the second time if you put the marble back after drawing? P(red and black)

17 You have 20 marbles in a bag. 8 are red and 6 are black
You have 20 marbles in a bag. 8 are red and 6 are black. What is the probability of drawing a red marble the first time and a black marble the second time if you put the marble back after drawing? P(red and black) x =

18 Dependent Compound Probability
You have 20 marbles in a bag. 8 are red and 6 are black. What is the probability of drawing a red marble the first time and a black marble the second time if you DON’T put the marble back after drawing? P(red and black) The second thing DEPENDS on what happens with the first one.

19 Dependent Compound Probability
You have 20 marbles in a bag. 8 are red and 6 are black. What is the probability of drawing a red marble the first time and a black marble the second time if you DON’T put the marble back after drawing? P(red and black) The second thing DEPENDS on what happens with the first one. x =

20 A deck of cards has 5 pink, 6 orange, 3 purple, and 5 navy cards
A deck of cards has 5 pink, 6 orange, 3 purple, and 5 navy cards. You pick 2 cards from the deck. Cards are not returned to the deck after they are picked. P(the first card is pink and the second card is purple)

21 There are 4 yellow, 6 black, and 4 pink marbles in a hat
There are 4 yellow, 6 black, and 4 pink marbles in a hat. You pick 3 marbles from the hat. Marbles are not returned after they have been drawn. P(the first marble is black, the second marble is not pink, and the third marble is yellow)

25 Practice

26 Last night, Christina counted the number of instant messages she received. She received four from Kyle, eleven from Christina, five from Steven, nine from Kevin, and twenty-four from her best friend (and very chatty) Natalie. She turned on her computer. What is the probability that the first instant message she receives is from Natalie?

27 You flip a coin and toss a 1-6 number cube. P(not 1 and not heads)

28 A deck of cards has 3 yellow, 3 gray, 4 blue, 4 pink, and 2 orange cards. You pick 2 cards from the deck. Cards are not returned to the deck after they are picked. P(the first card is yellow and the second card is not yellow)

29 You roll a cube which has the numbers 17, 20, 23, 26, 28, and 29 on it
You roll a cube which has the numbers 17, 20, 23, 26, 28, and 29 on it. You then spin a spinner which has 6 sections. The letters on the spinner are G, E, F, K, C, and H. P(E and not 20)

30 In how many ways can Connor, Hannah, Alexandra, Emily, Rebecca, and Shelby stand in line?
