Foundation Stage Curriculum Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (2012)
Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. Four Themes of EYFS: The Unique Child Positive Relationships Enabling Environments Learning and Development
6
Seven areas of learning and development:
3 Prime areas: Communication and Language Personal, Social and Emotional Development Physical Development 4 Specific areas of learning: Literacy Mathematics Understanding the World Expressive Arts and Design Each area is divided into different aspects of learning.
7
Planning our Curriculum
The Reception Team plan together to ensure all classes have the same learning opportunities. Working towards Early Learning Goal for each area Planning is informed by observation and assessment of the children's learning and interests. Teaching may be whole class, small groups or 1:1 Continuous Provision provides lots of of opportunities for self initiated activities both inside and outside the classroom. Plan Do Review

Reading Books from many different schemes are graded into levels called Book bands - each level has a different colour. Children choose a new book each day from their colour box. Children bringing home books from lilac / pink box to practise pre reading skills: pointing 1: 1, talking about pictures, using repetition. Weeks 6/7 teachers will read with each child and assess reading level. Some will then choose from a different box. We read with each child, individually or in a group, once a week and will assess their progress and judge whether they have the reading skills necessary to move to the next box. Reading Log books – comments / information Write title of book and comment to help us track progress. Book markers – new colour box.

How to help with reading
Enjoy sharing books together - keep reading stories to your children. Please try to read with your child every day – make it fun! Look through the book - use the pictures to talk about the story – ask questions! Match spoken words with written words by encouraging child to point 1:1 as you read. Use pictures and repetition. Encourage children to spot and use the phonemes they have been learning. Use initial sounds with picture clues to ‘guess’ words. Blend sounds to read simple CVC words, and later more complex words. Practise high frequency “tricky” words – spot in reading books. Ask questions to check comprehension.
11
Writing We encourage mark making in all areas, inside and outside the classroom. Different tools: pens, pencils, crayons, chalks, brushes, whiteboards and pens, clipboards, iPads, interactive whiteboards etc. Pencil control / pencil grip – fine motor skills / finger gym. Encourage and value emergent ‘pretend’ writing – squiggles / random letters. Letter formation taught alongside phonics. Practise letter formation in wide variety of ‘fun’ ways. Practised more formally later in year. Whole class shared writing to teach and practise skills ( L- R orientation, finger spaces, word building, sentence construction, full stop etc.) Teacher led group and individual writing. Encourage use of phonics to spell words independently. Practise spelling of ‘tricky’ HFW.
12
Mathematics Daily ‘carpet maths’ session used to develop and practise mathematical skills and introduce new concepts. Most mathematics done practically, inside and outside, linked to real life activities to develop understanding. Continuous provision. Children are encouraged to record in their own way. More formal recording may be modelled but not expected until later in year. How you can help: Lots of counting in lots of different ways. Playing maths games. Talking about time: Days of the week, months, seasons and times of day. Looking at money, sorting and identifying coins, paying for small objects. Looking for shapes in the environment. Helping with cooking.
13
Characteristics of Effective Learning
Alongside 7 areas of learning we will also be observing and monitoring how each child learns: Playing and Exploring (Engagement) Active learning (Motivation) Creating and Thinking Critically (Thinking)
14
ELLI - Our Learning Journey
The ability to look ahead and make plans. Being adaptable and willing to change plans. Using your imagination and being creative. Keep trying, ‘Stickability ‘. Being curious and asking lots of questions Making connections Team work We use these animals to talk about how we learn.

Assessment Most assessment is done through observation.
Supported by regular assessment of phonic knowledge ( Letters and sounds , blending and recognition of High Frequency Words ) Progress is tracked throughout the year using Early Learning Outcomes which are age related developmental statements leading up the Early Learning Goals at the end of the year. All displayed in the classrooms. We use an online Learning Diary (2buildaprofile) to record observations and link them to the appropriate Early Learning Outcomes . ed to parents at 3 assessment points Observations are used by the teaching team to inform our assessment of each child’s progress against the Early Learning outcomes and at the end of the year the Early Learning Goals. Emerging, Expected or Exceeding Booster / Extension groups
16
Reporting to parents 2Buildaprofile - Online Learning Profile containing photographs and observations linked to Early Learning Outcomes. E mailed at 3 assessment points: November, February, June (Look out for link that will be sent from 2Simple to activate address) Open Mornings – 1 each long term just before parents evenings. An opportunity to visit the classrooms and share your child’s work . Parents evenings – November and March. Individual appointments to discuss your child’s progress. End of year reports - July
