4 Warm Up Question What is the difference between a primary and secondary source? Use a specific example to justify your response.

5 Learning Objective Today I will... So that I can...
identify primary and secondary sources citing textual evidence to support my answer. So that I can... select and understand strong sources when researching a topic. I’ll know I’ve gotten it when... I have correctly identified each example and used textual evidence to support my choice.

6 Is this a primary or secondary source?
Teacher Model (I DO) A photograph of Ms. Harpole and her father at Disney World.

7 This is a PRIMARY source!
This photograph is a primary source because it is an original document that offers an inside look of a particular event. It is an example of first-hand evidence which tells a piece of the story of Ms. Harpole’s trip to Disney World when she was a young child.

8 Is this a primary or secondary source?
Partner Practice (WE DO) A commentary written on the O.J. Simpson murder trail.

9 This is a SECONDARY source!
The commentary written abut the O.J. Simpson case is a secondary source because it uses evidence found in primary sources and other secondary sources. It is not an original document related to the O.J. Simpson case. Also, this composition interprets other sources and evaluates the credibility of these sources.

10 Is this a primary or secondary source?
Partner Practice (WE DO) A piece of artwork created by Clint Myers

11 This is a PRIMARY source!
The artwork created by Clint Myers is a primary source because it is an original drawing. It is an example of the American Traditional art style. Another reason that I know this is a primary source is because the text explicitly states that drawings are categorized as creative works.

12 Is this a primary or secondary source?
A letter written to the principal arguing against school uniforms.

13 This is a secondary source!
This letter written to the principal expressing my opinion about mandatory school uniforms is a secondary source because it is not an original piece of evidence. In this article, I use evidence I gathered from other sources to support my opinion. It contains an evaluation of the topic instead of providing a first-hand account of the issue.

14 Is this a primary or secondary source?
Independent Practice (YOU DO) A graph that shows student data from the th grade LEAP test.

15 This is a PRIMARY source!
This pie chart that contains the 8th grade LEAP data from the school year is a primary source because it offers insight into how students performed on a standardized tests. In addition, I know this is a primary source because the text states that a primary source is something that can be used for research. This pie chart is a direct piece of evidence that shows student performance and could be used by teachers to make instructional decisions.

16 Is this a primary or secondary source?
Independent Practice (YOU DO) A poster that critiques another person’s writing.

17 This is a SECONDARY source!
This poster is a secondary source because it is a poster that was created by students who were critiquing a writing sample. Students had to analyze the writing and use evidence from the writing sample to pick out the characteristics of the sample. It includes generalizations such as “Handwriting is very neat and proper” and also includes ways to improve the writing sample.

18 Is this a primary or secondary source?
Independent Practice (YOU DO) A magazine that contains interviews and stories about Harry Potter

19 This is a secondary source.
A magazine about Harry Potter is a secondary source because it contains a variety of informational sources about Potter. According to the text, a magazine is a secondary source because it interprets evidence from other sources. The magazine does not contain just first-hand information from the original source, but it includes the views of multiple authors.
