3. Beginning in 1949 under Mao Zedong, a communist government was set up to lead China, which denied basic rights and freedoms of the Chinese people.

4. Mao’s and China’s communist view of government was similar to the Confucian view of government in that both stressed loyalty to government.

5. As a result, China’s communist government discouraged organized religions because they competed for the loyalties of the Chinese people.

6. In 1958, Mao launched the Great Leap Forward in an attempt to increase China’s agricultural and industrial output . . .
