2 Power & Energy Technology
Shut off the lights. What if there were no forms of energy. Would you be here now? How did the bus move this morning? Did the lights come on in the house this morning? What about your alarm clock, did it wake you up? If there were no form of energy the world would come to a halt. Mr. Huebsch

3 Behavioral Objectives
Student will be able to define Energy and Power Define work 6 Forms of energy Define Energy Technology

4 I. Intro to Power & Energy
Definitions Energy - Ability to do work Power - Measure of the work being done Work - Result of applying a force to move a mass a certain distance

5 Intro to Power & Energy Forms of Energy
Radiant - Energy given of by hot objects (light bulb, sun)

6 Intro to Power & Energy Chemical - Fossil fuels, Food
Thermal - Heat energy. When the radiant energy of the sun hits a solar collector

7 Intro to Power & Energy Mechanical - Energy that is able to move or impart motion (We eat food, chemical energy, and it gives us the energy to move, Mechanical.

8 Intro to Power & Energy Electrical Energy
Energy that causes electrons to move in a wire (Battery changes chemical energy into electrical energy)

9 Intro to Power & Energy Nuclear Energy
Energy held within the atoms of certain elements

10 Intro to Power & Energy Defining Energy Technology
Any Technology used to convert one of these six forms of energy to another for use in our lives Use Energy Conversion Handout to drive home the six forms of energy.

11 Intro to Power & Energy 2 Types of energy Potential - Contained energy
Kinetic - Exerted energy

12 II. Laws of Energy Conservation
1st Law of Thermodynamics Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed from one form to another

13 II. Laws of Energy Conservation
2nd Law of Thermodynamics A natural process always takes place in such a way as to cause an increase in the randomness of the universe If you try to get all the water back in the bucket you can not do it. Relate to other forms of energy. When you eat a candy bar, you don’t get 100% energy. Some of the candy bar is made into energy and some of the candy may not be used at all. Analogy: A bucket of water contains many droplets of water, highly condensed. If the bucket is spilled the droplets are spread all over and become more random.

14 III. Renewable vs. Nonrenewable
Renewable Energy Non-depletable ( in continues to be renewed) Non-Renewable Energy Depletable (being used up and will run out) Have class list some renewable resources. Solar, Wind, hydroelectric dams, wood resources List some non-renewable resources. Coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear resources what might be a problem with nonrenewable resources? Answer: Most of our technology today runs on these resources.
