2 Which Library holds your print Collections?
Main Library - print collections for Health in Social Science and Medicine (plus most of the Arts and Humanities Collections). Main Library – 5th floor – Postgraduate study area Western General and RIE have libraries too. There are department libraries, eg Psychology & Philosophy Library in the Psychology Building (7 George Square)

4 Journals Many thousands of journals online
Not always bought from every available host site Not always bought for access from volume 1 to now Some issues (even titles) only taken in print. “double quotes” force a search for the phrase.

DiscoverEd includes article level records. Default setting is to what you can read because the library has bought it.

10 Databases for Reviewing the Literature
To find what has already been published in your field: > Clinical Psychology (etc) PsycINFO American Psychological Association for psychology and psychiatry EMBASE and MEDLINE Both clinical medicine and related fields. Former has coverage of more European-based journals. ASSIA and Social Services Abstracts Research done or reported for those working outside a clinical setting CINAHL Plus Nursing ERIC Education but good on wellbeing of the child. Web of Science (Science Citation Index , Proceedings…) Tracking a particularly useful article through the literature since it was published. Journal Impact Factors

11 Inter-Library Loan (I.L.L.) for what we don’t have
30 free per year [5 for undergraduates] then £5 per request received 2 renewals which are done via Helpdesk or I.L.L. staff. Intra-library loan – Scans sent to you (or books/physical items sent to the Main Library for collection) from Library Annexe and other UoEdinburgh libraries not in the Central Area. same form (ie ILLiad above) FREE Annexe scans/items - same (week)day if in before noon Plus: NHS Knowledge Network - Professional bodies and their resources

12 Dissertation Reference management software
Eg EndNote – Direct import of records Group records and attach files to them. Cite while you write Edinburgh Research Archive (ERA) Electronic copies of UoEdinburgh awarded theses are deposited in ERA (a printed and bound copy goes to the University Archive). Find other theses awarded in your field > Theses

13 The online version is free.
The University supports the reference management software, EndNote, for which there is a desktop and online version. The online version is free. Comparison table at: EndNote desktop (see below for EndNote online) at an academic discount: Workshops, including webinars, for which anyone can sign up: ENDNOTE ONLINE: Register via web of science. Instructions: Then go directly:  Workshops listed in the workshop link above but in the session descriptions there you'll see links to the workbook used you can go through yourself in your own time:   ENDNOTE CITE WHILE YOU WRITE (CWYW) Is installed on the open access computers but for your own laptop/personal computer - Go to EndNote Online’s Format tab > Cite While You Write Plug-in. The CWYW plugin doesn't work with Word online - but you can download Word 2016 on up to 5 devices:

Borrowing Books 50 books – PGTs (60 for PGRs, 30 UGs) - including up to 3 Reserve books. Standard loan = 12 weeks. Short loan = 1 week Reserve books = up to 3 hours or overnight Self-issue and self-return But please ask the Helpdesk staff if you have questions etc.

16 Getting books on loan Sign-in [EASE authenticated]:
Request early returns for you to borrow next. Find as many results as there are to find (esp off-campus). See loan period defined for you. See previous as well as current loans. Save records. Save searches to run again.

17 Renewing Books Most books (excluding Reserve books) may be renewed for up to: 18 months in total, ie from first issue date, for (STANDARD) 12 week loans. 4 months for (SHORT) 1 week loans. You can’t renew if: you’ve reached the limit. the book’s been requested. your fines are too high. If you think it’s none of those, contact library staff and they’ll be able to help.

18 Suggest the Library buys Something
Borrowing Books contd Fines for overdue books: 20p per day for standard books / 40p per day for short loan books [maximum £10] – with one day’s grace. - on day two of being overdue, a fine equals the cost of two days being overdue. N.B. £1 per day for overdue recalled books [maximum £10] 2p per minute for overdue reserve books [maximum £25] Suggest the Library buys Something N.B. not as fast as I.L.L. Books:

19 Printing and photocopying
Payment via your Print account which you can top up at the machines, by asking library staff and via MyEd’s Online Print Credit channel. Printing via a web interface: Connecting your laptop: follow the links from Connecting to network printers Printing – uCreate Provides multimedia and specialist IT facilities on a self-service basis including printing posters.
