1 The Order of Operations
Do Now- Solve: Objective: You will be able evaluate expressions using the order of operations.

2 We use the acronym PEMDAS to help us remember the order operations
P Parenthesis or other grouping symbols (Brackets, Braces, and fractions bars) E Exponents M or D Multiplication OR Division, whichever comes first from left to right A or S Addition OR subtractions, whichever comes first from left to right

12 Expressions with Fraction Bars
A fraction bar is a grouping symbol and tells us to DIVIDE 1)Simplify then entire numerator (top of fraction) using PEMDAS 2) Simplify the entire denominator (bottom of fraction) using PEMDAS 3) Divide Example 5: Evaluate:

18 Important Vocabulary Variable: A letter that represents a number or a set of numbers. Algebraic expression: one or more algebraic terms in a phrase that may include variables, constants, and operating symbols (+, -, x, and ÷). An expression does NOT have an equal sign, so you CANNOT SOLVE an expression. You can evaluate an expression if you are given the variable(s) values or you may be able to simplify an expression. Examples: Algebraic Equation: Includes variables, operations, and an equal sign.

19 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions 1) Substitute values 2) Simplify using the order of operations Example 1 : Evaluate if x = 8 and y = 2.

20 Example 2: Evaluate for m= -5, n = 6, and p= - 3
b) c) d)

21 Try: 3) Evaluate each expression for x = 6, y =8, and z = 3. a) b) c) d)
