1 Mock Question: Crooks, Lennie, Candy, and Curley’s wife are lonely people with specific needs. Compare the four characters and discuss what they need and want to end their respective feelings of loneliness.

2 What they need to help end it.
Character Crooks Lennie Candy Curley’s Wife Why they are lonely? He is a black man surrounded by white people and isolated by his colour. He is mentally child-like and can’t relate to people. George is over protective Quote: “They play cards in there but I can’t play because I’m black.” “What pups George, I ain’t got no pups” What they need to help end it. Change in attitude / acceptance from the others Respect / Family / George to leave him be or try to include him more.

3 Introduction: Use key words from question and phrase as a statement.
Eg. “Crooks, Lennie, Candy and Curley’s Wife are four very lonely characters who are deprived of support, trust, respect and love.” Begin analysis: Why are they lonely … have a general statement that you will explore through the essay. Eg. “All four characters are excluded, not just because of their character/personality, but because of the harsh, prejudiced time they lived in. Briefly summarise: Why are they lonely – be more specific… Eg. “While Lennie’s loneliness lies in his inability to connect with adults, the loneliness of Curley’s wife comes from the negative interactions with adults and their prejudices. Candy’s loneliness is more to do with his old age and his fears for the future, while the racism shown towards Crooks has grown from a past of racial hatred and slavery.”

4 C+ Introduction… Crooks, Lennie, Candy and Curley’s Wife are four very lonely characters who are deprived of support, trust, respect and love. All four characters are excluded, not just because of their character/personality, but because of the harsh, prejudiced time they lived in.
