Presented by Joe Corona, Brian Jeffrey, and Jason Scafer Case Summary Dodgetown is culturally and economically diverse community, has high expectations for its children, and cherishes its ethnic diversity. The school district has 10 kindergarten through sixth grade schools. Silver Bullet Elementary has 33 teachers, 13 instructional aides, and the student population is 43% white, 30% Latino, 14% African American, 6% Asian, 5% Pacific Islander, and 2% Native American. Silver Bullet is one of ten schools in the district that qualifies for Title I funds with 94% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, serves as a center for LEP students, and provides instruction to 203 students who are not fluent in English . 33 Silver Bullets parents, administration, and staff are committed to the principle of celebrating life through learning. He is the A.P. at Silver Bullet Elementary School. During routine check, Starley Night, a 1st grader, has head lice, again.  The Nurse calls Starley’s mom to pick her up and take care of problem. Mom arrives and yells at the nurse, blames school for Starley’s lice, assaults you, and you call police. Next day, Starley returns with lice, nurse asks A.P. to call mom, mom gets irate, says she’s calling the district to file complaint against nurse and school district.

Presented by Joe Corona, Brian Jeffrey, and Jason Scafer Review & Prioritize the Data Mom leaves recorded message for superintendent, and she ends with bomb threat to “blow up the whole place and take the school nurse along with the lice-infested students at Silver Bullet down with the building.” Superintendent calls police, mom gets arrested, and convicted of a first offense felony. She serves three months in jail, and is required to do 90 days of community service. Ms. Night will be performing her community service duties at Silver Bullet Elementary School, and you have been assigned to supervise her. 5 The Problem The principal at Silver Bullet is asked by the superintendent to supervise Ms. Night’s behavior while doing community service at Silver Bullet Elementary.

13 Managing the Problem You should remain professional and do your best to supervise Ms. Night, despite your feelings toward her. If you are feeling too uncomfortable with the situation, you may also wish to review any related board policies, education codes, criminal codes, and contractual issues that may conflict with the situation.
