1 Interaction Region Alternative Layouts
J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

2 RDR Baseline Layouts for Interaction Region
J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

3 Why Single Shaft Alternative:
Cost savings for civil engineering (approx. $10million) Can simultaneously perform lowering in shaft and normal work in Experimental Cavern J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

4 General view of Proposed One Shaft Option
. Secondary9 m shaft Main service cavern machine & Exp B B Main 18 m shaft A Second service cavern Exp A J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

5 Main ventilation ducts
And services Exp A 18 m Lift Stair 80-t crane Exp A & B 9 m Lift Stair 20-t crane Machine & Exp B J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

6 . Access 20-t loads Exp B Main service cavern machine & Exp B Access
Heavy Loads 80-t loads Exp A & B Pressurized Egress tunnels Second service cavern Exp A J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

7 Movements of Experiment A
1: to main unloading zone 2: to garage position and leave space for experiment B in unloading zone 3: beam/garage position Exp B 1 2 3 A J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

8 Surface Area for One Shaft Option

9 Disadvantages of single shaft Option :
Detector B is in a less favorable position If Detector B needs ‘major’ repairs, neither detector could be on-line (eg magnet removal) Lifts & staircase have to be included in experimental shaft If delays incurred both TBM’s could arrive at experimental cavern at the same time, more flexibility with 2 shafts for finishing works/fitting out J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

11 General view of Proposed Off-set Two Shaft Option
9m shaft for machine Two shafts with lift/stairs services 80-t crane General view of Proposed Off-set Two Shaft Option J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

12 Two side caverns have tendency to act as a single span – intermediate pillar may be needed in certain areas, depending on ground conditions J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

13 Surface area would be a variation of what has been looked at with less distance between the shafts
J.Osborne CERN – 21 August 2007

14 Is the RDR cavern width enough ?
