1 How the writer use games to show an increasing violence, disorder and savagery in the novel

2 Games in the novel are significant as they start as ‘fun’ but become increasingly violent and savage because there are no adults to intervene. TRACK HOW THE PRESENTATION OF ‘GAMES’ ON THE FOLLOWING SLIDES SHOW THE BOYS’ MOVE AWAY FROM CIVILISATION TOWARDS SAVAGERY.

3 Stone-throwing – how does it develop?
1 & 2 – innocent fun when exploring; overturning the rock is a forerunner to Piggy’s death 4 – Roger throws the stones near Henry but is still obeying the ‘taboo of the old life’ 11 – the boulder is used as a deadly weapon to kill Piggy

4 Hunting – how does it develop?
Delight at the first successful hunt Then the cruelty when Robert pretends to be the pig & ‘squealed in mock terror, then in real pain’ – forerunner to Simon’s death Brutality of the sow’s death – boys ‘wedded to her in lust’ Viciousness of Simon’s death (Ch 9) e.g. ‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!’ & ‘There were no words and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws’ The last event mirrors the horrors of death in the war-torn outside world

5 Face-painting – how does it develop?
Mask liberates them in Ch 4, becoming ‘a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid’ Ch 8 – death of the sow Ch 9 – death of Simon Face-painting becomes associated with savagery and the boys become a tribe under Jack’s leadership
