1 This diagram illustrates the normal spatial relationship of the prostate gland to the bladder, urethra, and rectum. From the bladder neck, the prostatic urethra runs through the entire length of the prostate gland before becoming the membranous urethra where it traverses the external urethral sphincter. These close relationships help to illustrate how enlargement of the transition zone, which surrounds the prostatic urethra, may result in bladder outlet obstruction.
