form by normal faults where the crust has been fractured by tensional stresses. Ex. Tetons of Wyoming, Sierra Nevada Range in California

form when a large area of the crust is pushed upward by forces from within the earth. the cause is not clear as they occur far from plate boundaries. Ex. Adirondack Mountains of New York
