3 Observation “See, don’t just look” Swanson
Teaching someone how to SEE and not just look is one of the hardest things to accomplish. You've got to get a student to turn his own light bulb <awareness> on and scan for relavant information in his or her environment that affects personal safety and security

4 includes more than just
Observation Involves all 5 senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste observation includes more than just “seeing”

5 Observation Using the senses and appropriate tools to gather information about an object, event or phenomenon. SUBSKILLS include collecting evidence, identifying similarities and differences, classifying, measuring, and identifying relevant observations.

6 Observation Cycle "OAR not OR“
O - Observe (SEE) what populates your environment A - Assess what you need to do about it R - React by carrying out the required action Observe Assess React

7 Advantages of Observation
Most direct measure of behavior Provides direct information Easy to complete, saves time Can be used in natural or experimental settings

8 Observation Skills Observation skills are when we observe our own behavior and other’s behavior, anticipate individual and multicultural differences in nonverbal and verbal behavior. It also means the ability to see beyond a limited scope. It is the ability to sense or gage the feelings of others when things are going good and when things are not so good.

9 Steps in planning for observation
Determine who/what will be observed. Determine aspects that will be observed (characteristics, attributes, behaviors, etc.). Determine where and when observations will be made. Develop the observation guide Pilot test the observation guide Train the observers and have them practice. Conduct the observations Analyze and interpret the collected information. Write up and use your findings.

31 Barriers to good listening
Listener’s notion that he/she knows more than the speaker. Speakers inability to express clearly. Fatigue/illness of listener, emotional stress. Pre-conceived ideas of the listener. External noise Wrong selection of the topic. Fear/jealousy on the part of the listener. Pre-occupation with some pressing problems. Developing a keen sense of observation is a must. The technique lies in simply keeping our eyes and ears open at all times and never failing to register what we see or hear Andy Cox is President of Cox Consulting Group LLC. 32 Some Tips for good listening
Find out the areas of interest, a poor listener tunes out dry topics but a good listener tries to find out what is in it for me. One should work at listening. Good listening takes energy. Attention is a form of diverted energy. One should listen for ideas. A good listener focuses on the main ideas. He does not fasten on to peripheral things or seize on some or other which may block his mind from considering the central. One should hold his fire. A poor listener tends to enter into argument. The aroused person usually becomes pre-occupied by trying to plot an embarrassing question to ask the speaker but the good listener does not judge until comprehension is completed. Developing a keen sense of observation is a must. The technique lies in simply keeping our eyes and ears open at all times and never failing to register what we see or hear Andy Cox is President of Cox Consulting Group LLC. 33 Some Tips for good listening
One should judge content not delivery. A good listener is not interested in his personality or delivery. He works to find out what is in it. One should resist distraction. If the distraction cannot be made easily than it becomes a matter of concentration. A poor listener is usually distracted. One should exercise his/her mind. Good listener considers apparently difficult presentation of the speakers as challenge to their mental abilities. One should capitalize one’s thought speed. Most person talks at speed of words per minute. There is good evidence that if thought is measured in words, most of us can think easily at about 4 times of that rate. A good listener constantly applies his spare thinking time on what is being said.
