1 Announcements If you want to retake the literary devices test, please come after school today. LAST CHANCE! Your revised literary essay on your poem is due Friday at the start of class. Please submit via the Turn-In Option. Please bring in your original draft! If there are not significant changes, you grade will reflect your effort. Your complete synthesis essay is due on Monday, November 7th at the start of class. NO ERRORS! Please submit via the Turn-In Option.

4 Attention to Detail – Revising/Editing Your Writing
The moment your pen touches the paper, you are revising and editing your essay. Revision is re-working and re-writing, it is not merely changing a few words, adding a sentence here or there, or taking out material that was unnecessary. Editing is fixing any grammatical, spelling, punctuation, capitalization errors in a paper.

5 Everything that MUST be going through your head as you read…
To revise a paper is to… restructure the paper eliminate unnecessary details or information add details move paragraphs and sentences around rewrite paragraphs and sentences double-check the accuracy of the supporting evidence reword awkward areas To edit a paper is to… fix spelling mistakes fix capitalization errors fix punctuation errors fix grammatical errors

6 Mr. Hew – The Super Model Watch as Mr. Hew thinks through this piece of writing and revises and edits it. Notice how he questions the student’s thinking and provides detailed feedback – Positive and Negative. Notice how he reads it out loud. 7 Your Turn… Read this page that has two paragraphs of student writing and edit/revise the students’ thinking and rip it apart. In order to be a better writer, you need to be a better editor. Read with LASER VISION!

8 Homework Read over Jerry’s essay and see what you could do to model his writing. Complete your literary essay (with a lot of editing/revision) and submit it before the start of class using the Turn-In Option on Engrade.
