1 Animal Adaptations and Behaviors Help Them Survive

2 How does having oil in their feathers help water birds?

3 Review environment The ___________of an animal is everything that surrounds and effects it, both living and nonliving.

4 A _________ is a grassland in a tropical climate with a few tress
A _________ is a grassland in a tropical climate with a few tress. Zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles eat different parts of the ________. Savanna grasses

5 Basic Needs Water _______ Food ________ or Proper Temperature shelter
protection

6 Adaptations body parts or behaviors of living things that help them survive in a certain environment help animals meet their needs

7 Body Part Adaptations Animals have body part adaptations that help them get food and water

8 Penguins Strong Wings – great for paddling and chasing after fish

9 Dog Tongue- to scoop up water

10 Elephants Trunk - lifts water to mouth Tusks - are used for drilling
to underground water Trunk - lifts water to mouth

11 Giraffe Long neck - It is used to reach leaves in tall trees
Long front legs - front legs are longer than the hind legs. These long front legs make it easier to reach tall leaves Fringed tail - keeps flies and other pests away. Camouflaged coat - patches of different sizes and colors help hide the giraffe AFRICAN SAVANNA

12 Body Part Adaptations Some animals have body parts that serve as shelter or help them build shelter

13 Snails and Armadillos Hard outer covering

14 Pocket Gophers Large front teeth, sharp claws and flexible bodies
These adaptations help gophers dig tunnels that shelter them

15 Body Part Adaptations Some animals have body parts that help provide a
proper temperature for them

16 Polar Bears their thick white fur and layer of fat beneath their skin protect them from the Arctic cold their fur also provides camouflage when hunting

17 Elephants An elephant's enormous ears (weighing up to 110 pounds each) are good at picking up sound, but are also used as an air conditioner of sorts. When the temperature rises, elephants flap their ears. This cools blood flowing through vessels in the ears, which then flows back to the body, cooling it in turn.

18 Behaviors ways living things act or respond to their environment
help animals survive we will study two types of behaviors; instinctive behavior and learned behavior

19 Instinctive Behavior Instinctive behavior is something the animal is born knowing how to do (behaviors they inherit from their parents) Examples include fish swimming

20 Learned Behavior Animals are not born knowing what to do or how to do it Behaviors that living things develop after birth Learned behavior is learned by experience and sometimes from a parent

21 Learned Behavior Examples include
lions and leopards learning how to hunt by watching and practicing with their mothers

22 In a park you see a dog playing ball with its owner
In a park you see a dog playing ball with its owner. When you walk over to pet the dog, the owner tells the dog to lie. The dog begins lies down in the grass. A squirrel scampers by. The dog leaps up and runs after the squirrel. What was the learned behavior? What was the instinctive behavior?

23 Extinct If the needs of all members of a species can’t be met, that species becomes extinct, or dies out. If a species is extinct, the species is no longer living
