2 Outline Background What is Islandora? Islandora Features Migration
Demo Questions

3 PALS – a program of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities; providing library technology services since 1978 Experienced knowledgeable staff: systems, programming, training, support Host and support Islandora, an open source Digital Asset Management System Use if necessary, or replace/delete as appropriate.

4 Islandora is a an open source digital asset management (DAM) solution that preserves, manages, and showcases a wide variety of your unique materials. Islandora is a highly flexible and viable DAM solution. It preserves, manages, and stores your digital assets. It supports a wide variety of formats from yearbooks, newspapers, and photographs to streaming video, audio, dissertations/theses, and more.

5 Islandora Open Source Community
Univ. of Prince Edward Island Discovery Garden Islandora Foundation Google Group Interest Groups Camps and conferences Hundreds of implementations worldwide There is a highly active open source International community behind Islandora. There are highly skilled developers across the World, from South America to Hong Kong to the US and Canada. The group communicates online via Google Groups, and is highly responsive and helpful. There are a number of camps each year and a week long conference held every other year, which started in 2015. Islandora Foundation is the member organization and helps manage funds for community. Islandora was developed at UPEI and they are still highly active. Discovery Garden is a spin-off company that started with Foundation. They contribute most of their work back to the community, very good about sharing and contributing material. Hundreds of implementations worldwide.

6 PALS Islandora Services
Host server and application Assist with planning repository and metadata Create customized interface and ingest forms Training and Support PALS will take care of the technology side so you can focus on the content PALS will host server and application, assist with planning of repository – structure, ingest forms, metadata PALS will do updates PALS will create custom metadata ingest forms, help design workflows PALS will provide training as needed and ongoing support PALS will help take you from documents/material sitting on a desk or in closets to a robust digital repository that focuses on and meets your needs We’ll help you go from this . . . to this!

7 What is Islandora? Islandora is a digital asset management software solution that uses: Drupal for the user interface (this is the “bun”) Solr for searching/indexing (these are the toppings) Islandora is the “meat” (or middleware) that pulls it all together Fedora for the digital asset management software – manages your assets

8 Islandora Core Features
Web based “Solution Packs” Automatic processes Customizable interface, tools, forms Preservation These are the core features that really make Islandora unique: Web based, can be accessed anywhere with WiFi Mobile responsive Islandora uses “Solution Packs” or groups of Drupal modules to support different formats/types of material Several automatic processes occur at ingest The user interface is highly customizable, can look like what you want – we really can do anything Drupal can do Can add various tools and features as needed – again, anything Drupal can do Very strong preservation tools in Islandora Preservation metadata generated automatically at ingest Checksum Checker module monitors file integrity Master stored with derivatives – can easily manage both from admin menu Image from:

9 Islandora supports multiple formats with Drupal “Solution Packs”
Islandora supports many formats through what are called Solution Packs Islandora Solution Packs are out of the box Drupal modules based on best practices for various formats, such as audio, video, newspapers, photographs, compound objects (kit) Each Solution Pack includes an ingest form and appropriate viewers that display the content of each format Also different automatic processes occur when items are added to the repository

10 Automatic Processes Generate Derivatives MODS Record Dublin Core
Ingest original TIFF image, you get… MODS Record Dublin Core TECHMD A key element to Islandora is a series of automated processes that occur when you add an object to the repository. These are different for each Solution Pack. All you need is one object. For example if you ingest a TIFF, the metadata records are generated along with the technical metadata (techMD), the thumbnail that displays in a search, a JPG, and a JPG2000 that is displayed online. It is possible for an admin user to download any of these derivitives, including the TIFF image. One can download it and then use that copy for anything including marketing purposes without impacting the master in Islandora. For example, with the Book Solution Pack, when you add pages to the book object, you get…OCR, a PDF of each page, a Thumbnail, metadata records, JPG, and JPG200. Thumbnail JPEG2000 JPG Original and derivatives stored together

11 Customizable User Interface and Tools
Can add Drupal modules, themes, functions based on your needs Any module or theme used for Drupal can be used for Islandora. It’s a simple process to find and install modules. We’ll install the modules/themes for you. You just tell us what tools/abilities you’re looking for. Any module or theme used for Drupal can be used for Islandora. Let PALS know what functionality you are interested in and we’ll research available Drupal modules and see what needs to be done to get the feature added.

12 * This is how Islandora handles metadata
Custom ingest forms (metadata entry) forms can be created for any collection/format/type of object Ingest forms can use default text for metadata fields that are used a lot, drop down menus that list controlled vocabulary terms (subjects, names, dimensions, GIS coordinates…) Forms can have custom instructions, and links out to useful websites The forms can follow any metadata standard For example, created ones for MSU-Mankato that follow Minnesota Digital Library Guidelines Islandora really does make metadata description/entry easy for everyone Easy for students to use (MSU-Mankato uses several students for metadata entry)

13 Data Sets Islandora supports research data
Combination of Solution Packs : Compound + Binary Other options Data Solution Pack Chemistry Solution Pack Biosciences Solution Pack Islandora supports large data sets; PALS has no experience here but would work with you to build a solution Great example of how Islandora can be extended d to fit specific needs SFUdora Simon Fraser University Image: Learning in Neural Circuits University of Toronto Scarborough

14 Institutional Repository Tools
IR features available in a collection of Drupal modules known together as “Island Scholar” Used to support dissertations, masters’ theses Examples: Moss Landing Marine Laboratories Tulane University University of Prince Edward Island Islandora very robust support for institutional repository functionality PALS does not have an IR implementation but highly interested in developing one

15 Preservation Tools Technical and Preservation metadata automatically generated Original master object stored with derivatives Backups File integrity: Checksums Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies If only it were as easy as pushing a big red button With Islandora it’s very close Technical metadata automatically generated using a FITS module – extracts the information from the original file Checksums are automatically generated at ingest

16 Preservation Metadata
Technical and Preservation metadata generated automatically with Islandora FITS and PREMIS Drupal Modules Example of technical metadata extract with FITS Also PREMIS record automatically generated

17 Preservation: File integrity
Islandora generates checksums automatically Check checksums with checksum checker (How many checksums can your checksum checker check…) This module produces XML and HTML representations of PREMIS metadata for objects in your repository. Currently, it documents all fixity checks performed on datastreams, includes 'agent' entries for your institution and for the Fedora Commons software and, maps contents of each object's "rights" elements in DC datastreams to equivalent PREMIS "rightsExtension" elements. Essentially checksums are generated so they can be checked/monitored over time to see if there is any file degradation

18 Simon Fraser University: Migrating 1.3 Million Objects
SFU migrated 1.3 million objects from ContentDM  Islandora Created the “Move to Islandora Kit” which can be used to manage a large-scale migration: Created other tools It is possible to migrate large amounts of data into Islandora, either from ContentDM or other DAMs Simon Fraser migrated over a million objects and created tools to help streamline process for others: Gets data about ContentDM collections, converts into Islandora collection objects Two parts: PHP script to get data from ContentDM Drush command to load it into Islandora We also have experience batch loading objects into Islandora, for example 17,000 photographs for The College of St. Scholastica

19 DEMO https://youtu.be/fEeJ_ZHXpGg
Good idea to start with “site overviews”. Go to some of our other sites – perform some searches to show off material in production environment. College of St. Scholastica ( Search for homecoming, go to right (facets) and click on photographs A lot of these were part of batch load, they are going through and fixing them * St. Cloud Technical and Community College ( Original reason for their repository was to store Accreditation materials – one time Higher Learning Commission visited, they couldn’t find material easily. Don’t want that to happen again! So decided a DAM would be a good idea. Search for “Higher Learning Commission” (use quotes) to bring them up Also search for “Edible books” – brings up photos of a contest they hold every year, shows range of material you can have in a repository After the first two sites, go to MSU-Mankato ( There is a lot of good material here. Some good searches are: “Vikings”, “Mankato” to get a lot of search results. A fun search is “pot holes”. MSU-Mankato has a lot of newspapers you can show. Click on “Student Publications” then Student Magazines or Student Newspapers. Also the Yearbook collection is fun to show, alumni are always interested in seeing yearbooks. One thing you can do at MSU’s site is show off some features: map browse, statistics, social media sharing. MSU-Mankato has a map browse you can show. Click on “Campus Experience”, then “Photographs”, and click on the Google-like map icon above the collection to display the map. It will take a few moments to load. Also “My favorites” = bookmarking. One can create an account, login, and save a list of favorite items. Great for researching purposes; can the list of favorites, share it over social media, etc. If logged in as admin user you will have access to a “Dashboard” and statistics, which are done through Piwik (like Google Analytics Dashboard is in upper right-hand corner after logging in Consider sharing an item over social media. Click on any object, then click on one of the social media icons to the left. Think about your audience and what other features they might want to see. After searching and showing off features, it would be good , if possible, to show how you ingest material If not possible, show this video:
