This unit will focus on the origins of government and politics What is human nature and how does it affect politics? What are states and why do we study them when talking about politics? What gives states their power? What makes states legitimate rulers of people? Why is the rule of law important? What are the differences among democracy, communism, and autocratic forms of government? What makes democracy so appealing and why do we study democratization

Ethics Morality Ethics A person’s basic set of beliefs Morality can differ from person to person and from society to society Rules that society has agreed on to follow Usually these rules follow the morals of whatever society you are living in Why would morals and ethics matter when talking about government and politics?

6 Human nature Locke Hobbes Humans are naturally good They have certain basic rights that must be met by their government They “sign” a social contract with their government in order to be protected Humans are in a natural state of war They have to be protected by a powerful monarch to stop themselves from killing each other What do you think is our basic human nature? Peace, Purity, Violence, War, Aggression, etc?

7 Homework Prepare for philosophical chairs
You will answer the following question: Which theory of government matches our basic human nature – Social Contract Theory (Locke) or Absolute Power Theory (Hobbes)? Print out the Philosophical Chairs Instructions, read, and bring with you
