2 Basic Cell Design and Properties
A cell is composed of two electrodes (solid conductors) and one electrolyte (aqueous conductor) Electrodes are usually two metals or graphite and a metal. The cathode is the positive electrode The anode is the negative electrode Electrons move from the anode through conducting material to the cathode

3 Half-Cells The design of a cell results in electrons passing through an external circuit rather than directly from one substance to another To determine what happens in different parts of the cell, chemists use a different design separating the parts of the cell so they can be studied more easily Each electrode is in contact with an electrolyte but the electrolytes surrounding each electrode are separated A porous boundary separates the electrolytes while still permitting ions to move between the solutions through tiny openings

4 Half-Cells Each part is called a half-cell and consists of one electrode and one electrolyte Example Copper metal in a solution of copper ions Zinc metal in a solution of zinc ions

5 Galvanic Cell A galvanic cell is an arrangement of two half-cells that can produce electricity spontaneously The strongest oxidizing agent present in the cell always undergoes a reduction at the cathode The strongest reducing agent present in the cell always undergoes an oxidation at the anode

6 Inert Electrodes An inert electrode is a solid conductor that will not react with any substances present in the cell. (Ex. Carbon or platinum)

7 Line Notation Line notation is an abbreviated way to describe cells.

8 Practice

9 Practice Platinum, Pt(s), is the inert electrode that is generally used in the iron (II) permanganate cell.
