1 READ PGS 2.20-2.21 section 9.0.0 of CARPENTRY FUNDAMENTALS textbook
DO NOW: READ PGS section of CARPENTRY FUNDAMENTALS textbook

2 Aim #17: HOW IS LUMBER CALCULATED TO COMPLETE A JOB?
Objectives: By the end of this lesson students will be able to… Calculate board feet. Calculate sheet materials. Calculate lineal feet.

3 Q: You are asked to order 1”x6” lumber for the base molding of an apartment complex. The lumber yard only sells the material in units of 1”x12”x1’. How many units should be ordered? The measurements should be divided by 12 since the lumber is sold in units of 1 foot. This means that each foot of lumber bought would yield twice the amount required.

4 CALCULATING BOARD FEET:
Formula = T”xW”xL’/12 Example: 2”x4”x12’/12 = 8 BD.FT.

5 CALCULATING SHEET MATERIALS
Area of space/ Area of sheet Example: Space= 24’ x48’ & Plywood sheets =4’x8’ 1152 sq. ft./32sq. Ft = 36 sheets of plywood

6 CALCULATING LINEAL FEET
Lineal feet = total length Room: 12’ x12’ Perimeter= 144 lineal feet

7 Summary: Estimate the following problems.
You are required to order 1”x4” boards of Southern pine to go around the border of a room that measures 10’x16’. How many board ft of southern pine should be ordered? 18 Board feet of Southern Pine should be ordered

8 You’re installing ¾” C-D plywood for the sub-floor of a room that measures 20’x22’. How many sheets are needed to cover this floor? 14 sheets of ¾” C-D plywood will cover the floor

9 How many lineal feet of 3 5/8” crown molding are needed to complete a room that measures 13’x15’?
56 lineal feet of 3 5/8” molding are needed
