1 BYOD Laptop Program 2018 (Year 5 to Year 7)
Edwardstown Primary School

2 WELCOME Kathy Papps - Principal

3 BYOD OVERVIEW & OFFICE 365 Shane Atkins – Assistant Principal

4 SCHOOL DIRECTION Our school has embraced a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approach for enriching the learning of students and teachers. Electronic devices are used to promote genuine learning, research, problem solving, organisation, positive communication and responsible digital citizenship.

5 FEEDER HIGH SCHOOLS DEVICES
The majority of High Schools our sevens are transitioning to require that students use iPads and or Laptops; and as such we are unable to have device consistency from Primary School to High School. However we as a school are developing their technical abilities with digital learning tools such as laptops and iPads across our school, and throughout their learning experiences.

6 ADVANTAGES OF BYOD The advantage of a BYOD program is that it enables students to personalise their learning and adapt technology to suit their individual learning styles, rather than working with a device that has been prescribed for them and is a share school device. The technology is available to the student all day at school, so learning is not limited by availability of high demand school resources. Provides consistent and more up-to-date access to ICT, allowing students to view e-textbooks, videos, educational apps, online research and digital learning apps. Seamless integration between home and school, leading to more consistent application to learning.

7 ADVANTAGES OF BYOD Research suggests that when students have ownership of their devices, engagement in the learning increases, ICT skills improve and students become more versatile in the way they demonstrate their learning outcomes for now and in the future. It is vital that students have the capacity to learn with technology. It allows all teachers and students to have access to world-class digital content with which to create, communicate and collaborate locally and globally. Learning is engaging, personalised and authentic to enable students to become confident, creative, active and informed citizens of the twenty-first century

8 BENEFITS OF BYOD Highly reliable/ device available all the time for “just now” learning opportunities Affordable ($600 - $985 / unit) – 3 year life of the device Long battery life ( 7+ hours - all day device) Reliable infrastructure (Upgraded Wi-Fi + outdoor learning spaces) Easily repaired (if purchased through the ASI portal next business day) Same problems - same solutions. Students/Staff can often solve their own problems Technology (allows students to show their work from their device onto the classroom interactive smartboard or TV)

9 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT BYOD
We are updating the Wi-Fi system throughout the school, increasing space capacity and outdoor learning space accessibility. Internet bandwidth and speed. Staff/ Student training to support collaborative learning opportunities (Office 365)

10 WHY YEARS 5/6/7? ‘Just in time learning’ (immediate source of information for answers and solving problems) New technology allows students to show what they are learning and working on / project leanring onto the classroom interactive TV/ Smartboard and collaborate/ receive feedback. Learning continuity is enhanced by providing full access to learning programs at school and at home (Office 365) Homework, projects, research and publishing in all curriculum areas. Inquiry Learning. At the core of the Australian Curriculum are important life skills that include the ability to locate accurate information through self-directed internet browsing. This is not ‘Free-time’. It is, however, learning led by the student with the teacher’s scaffolding, supervision and guidance around concepts for inquiry.

11 SCHOOL PROVIDED DEVICES
Over the last few years, we as a school, have increased students device ratio 1:8 Year 3-7 (240 students). Therefore 1 laptop for every 8 year 3-7 students to access. The technological requirements of schools now means that it is not feasible for schools to purchase and maintain a large and ever increasing amount of devices. Some schools substantially increase their fees to purchase and maintain school technology. EPS has chosen to avoid large increases in fees.

12 BYOD USER AGREEMENTS Cyber Safety & Device User Agreement (Years 3-7)
Office 365 User Agreement Sent out in the next few weeks need to be read and signed by student and parent, and returned by Week 6, Term 4.

13 OFFICE 365 - COLLABORATION
What is Office 365? Office 365 provides staff/students with an and collaboration platform to create and/or upload/share content. This may include websites, presentations, written, audio, images and video material as part of their educational program. All data and information within LearnLink Office 365 is stored within an Australian based ‘cloud’ and provides the following services to students. Office Online Office Online is a web-based, lightweight version of Microsoft’s Office productivity suite (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote) that can be used on most devices capable of connecting to the internet via a web browser.
