Universiti Malaysia Perlis Durable Latex Granules: A Potential Recycled Products Recovered from Treated Latex Wastewater INVENTORS: Dr. Farrah Aini Dahalan Afizah Ayob Najihah Abd Rashid CONTACT DETAILS: School of Environmental Engineering Universiti Malaysia Perlis Kompleks Pengajian Kejuruteraan Jejawi 3 02600 Arau Perlis PROBLEM STATEMENT : Due to the use of acid in latex coagulation, the effluent discharged from latex rubber factories is acidic and re-dissolves the rubber protein. Normally, chemical coagulant is added into rubber industrial wastewater in order to separate the solid:liquid fraction. This has caused the wastewater treatment practice in rubber industry more challenging in terms of cost and effluent quality issue. As far as rubber industry is concerned, the environmental issues are caused due to the chemical usage at the different stages of operation. The end products formed after the use of chemicals will be poisonous and highly toxic and whose effective disposal will become very much essential. Fig 1: Durable Latex Granules Fig 2: Formation of Latex Granules in SBR PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: This study has successfully recovered Durable Latex Granules from rubber industrial wastewater via aerobic granular sludge technology without using any coagulant or additional supporting carrier material.. The Durable Latex Granules possessed dense, compact, spherical, regular, and strong features. These characteristics have initially granted the developed rubber–base wastewater highly efficient in sludge settleability in the wastewater treatment. Besides, the dried portion of the granules has potential for fabrication of new latex-based eco-products such as rubber pavement for outdoor playground. COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL : Rubber industrial wastewater Eco-product Latex granules cultivated from the SBR can be fabricated into new eco-products such as latex floor mat and interlocking rubber pavement PRODUCT ADVANTAGES : Naturally recovered from industrial wastewater Durable Dense Compact ORIGINALITY / NOVELTY: Originality : Aerobic granulation technology that can cater for both industrial wastewater treatment and recovery of by-product in the form of latex granules . Novelty : Latex-based product recovery system and applications of rubber industrial wastewater treatment Coagulant-less recovery method in latex industry A small foot-print treatment system
