1 Group 2b: Processing technologies and value chain for small scale and household processors
Sunday Idahosa Farouk Kuraw Basil Esinulo Ayominde Akindolie Makinde Kehinde Ralph Okalanwa Peter Oladele Kolawole Thierry Tran Andrew Westby Samuel Ayeni Onoja Aneh Samuel Taiwo

2 Group 2b: Processing technologies and value chain for small scale and household processors
Small-scale: Processing centers, e.g. Oyo. Processors purchase roots delivered by farmers and middlemen. Household: Family operation (typically women and children) processing own roots with grating and roasting operations conducted at communal private operator.

3 General goals Improving livelihoods of farmers and processors
Food security Income Affordable and good quality products Environmental sustainability in processing

4 Specific challenges Farm level Processing
Low yields / Access to high yielding varieties Perishability of roots Logistics: Transport and road infrastructure Processing Tedious, inefficient; Unhealthy wood fire smoke Access to suitable, affordable, small-scale machinery Easy maintenance Energy availability Child labour Quality management

5 Specific challenges Environment Cross-cutting Disposal of peels
Liquid waste Unhealthy processing environment Cross-cutting Maintaining women’s livelihood Access to finance Lack of market organization Communication channels among stakeholders / Supply chain management Business management skills Slow adoption of technology

6 Solutions & knowledge gaps
Community ownership: Co-create solutions with involvement of community Farm level Involve and train farmers on seed selection and agronomic practices On-farm processing or proximate processing facilities Including communal facilities And/or better road infrastructure and transport facilities Processing Efficient and ergonomic machine design Inclusive design integrating the expectations of processors Demonstration & training for processors: Operation & maintenance Availability of electricity Child labour: Mechanization reduces need for labor and increases incomes to send children to schools?

7 Solutions & knowledge gaps
Environment Technology available to process peels into animal feed (HQCP) Liquid waste: Solutions to explore Cross-cutting Work with women processors to develop shared vision of the future of gari processing Innovative financing to purchase machines: Micro-credit organizations Branding, certification, standards Mobile phone service (SMS, app) to circulate information among stakeholders Capacity building on business management Identify factors slowing down adoption of technology

8 Key issues Factors slowing down or blocking adoption of innovations?
Where is the power to make decisions? In the household / In the community of processors Where goes the added value of processing? Income distribution within the household Repartition of incomes between processors Approach to create a dialogue among shareholders leading to a consensus on possible improvements of gari value chains

9 Gender and equity dimensions
Reduce drudgery and processing time for women Reduce exposure to unhealthy conditions (smoke, contaminated wastewater)  Mechanization Maintain incomes and employment of women  Work with women to find solutions that do not threaten women’s access to incomes and employment

10 Next steps Overall approach: Demonstrate working solutions with partner processing centers and households Co-development of the solution with processors How many: 6-12?  1-2? Concept note 3-5 years project Business case Work packages: Relations with partner centers and households, Technical solutions; Coordination How to involve fabricators of equipment to distribute new technology Contacts to identify processing centers and households to implement the project Pre-test technologies to strengthen the business case List of possible changes, to validate with processors community Mobilization of resources and execution of project Project outputs: Improved processing solutions at partner processing centers and households Lessons learned on how to implement sustainable change

11 Next steps New project cycle for expansion - 5 years
