10 Gas system

11 From gas panel to your detector.. .. and back
Gas panel  detector: 6mm pipes, use SAGANA stainless steel connectors ( , , CERN store) Detector  exhaust: 10mm pipes, use SAGANA stainless steel connectors ( , , CERN store; useful also reduction 6 to 10mm: ) Flexible stainless steel would be preferred to plastics: any contribution from the user? M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

12 In the gas zone.. Use premixed bottle (buy them in advance!!! Send to Gas Point 887-G0-921) -or- connect to the main distribution (Ar, CO2, N2, He, ethane, isobutan, CH4, you pay the bill at the end!!!). Only CERN mass flowmeter (or equivalent with explosion proof certification) are allowed for mixing flammable gas. 5 lines TO experimental hall (6mm pipes, use SAGANA stainless steel connectors) 5 lines FROM experimental hall (10mm pipes, use SAGANA stainless steel connectors) TO BE CONNECTED TO THE BUILDING EXHAUST (layout under discussion) Mixing systems, pipes and connectors MUST BE PROVIDED BY THE USERS Retention bucket for heavy flammable gases Main distribution: not-flammable flammable Our pipes Slot for 2 racks M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

13 Available cables

14 Cables list (barrack  area)
Lines installed from the experimental area to the barracks Fiber line x2 Ethernet lines x3 + 2 small switches at both sides SHV lines x4 16 LEMO coaxial cables Still missing: Other fiber lines for October More coaxial cables Cables inside the experimental area must be provided by the users!!! M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

15 Trigger devices

16 Trigger scintillators
3 large scintillators and 1 small finger are available. About 10x10 cm2 scintillators Small 1x0.5 cm2 finger More of them can be found, but standard PMTs cannot work in magnetic field!! M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

17 Tracking telescope

18 Micromegas tracking telescope
3 double chambers, 250μm pitch strips readout, about 2.5x2.5 cm2 active area Need one gas line and (maybe) an additional premixed bottle Need 6 Gassiplex and the relative DAQ chain: especially VME controller, sequencer and 3 C-RAMS must be rented well in advance from the pool. Which setup will it instrument? (Never tried in magnetic field..) A huge work must be still done for all the tracking, reconstruction and analysis programs!!! M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

19 10 x 10 cm2 GEM detectors as additional tracker
VFAT readout for these detectors is under test If no stopping points are found, CERN-GDD group is interested to test this readout on the beam (we don’t need magnetic field). So that: It is the opportunity to have an additional tracker that can be exploited by the other user The micromegas telescope could be used in the setup inside magnetic field M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

20 HV & Electronics

21 HV & Electronics 2 racks are available, one per setup. Do we need more? NIM, VME Crates and relative modules must be bring by the users. They can be rented from the e-pool For HV in June we rented the CAEN SY1527 mainframe and the required boards. The system can be remotely controlled via telnet and slow control programs can be easily developed in Labview M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

22 Magnet issues

23 Magnet In June we discovered that the ramping up speed of the magnet has been strongly limited: now it takes more than 10 minutes to arrive at full field. Luckily, we had only one quenching problem during the run and a major problem in the afternoon of the last day (when we dismounted it was still under repair.. we have to check the situation now..) If the ramping up cannot be changed for safety reason, we have to consider this long dead time, and intervention in the setup can be much longer M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

24 Beam requirement, time sharing, pre-test beam preparation at CERN

25 June experience We ran always with 150 GeV/c positive pions.
We changed the intensity during the run. For DAQ problems of one group, high intensity has been negotiated. The access required long time in H4 line (~4’ for access + 4’ for closing the area) One group completed the installation and commissioning later. So that, we change the “main user” (who decides the access) in turns of 8 hours. When both groups arrived in a full data-taking condition, it was easier to agree short accesses from time to time. M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009

26 Proposal: detector preparation in lab at CERN before test beam
We propose that for October groups prepare and test their detectors already equipped with their electronics and full DAQ chain AT CERN AT LEAST 1-2 WEEKS BEFORE THE TEST BEAM INSTALLATION Groups coming outside CERN are guest of CERN-GDD lab (154-R-007 in Meyrin site) A stronger proposal is to forbid the access to the test beam to setup whose at least DAQ chain is not tested before the test beam M. Alfonsi (CERN) RD51-WG X 03/06/2009
