3. Literacy Component of NAPLaN
Language Conventions
Measures skills in spelling, grammar, punctuation
WRITING Test:
Assesses skills in narrative or persuasive writing
READING Test: measures literacy proficiency.

4. Thursday 11th May Numeracy
Two types of questions- multiple choice and constructed responses
Test measures students’ proficiency in number, algebra, measurement and geometry

5. Reading Component 65 minutes for students to complete 50 questions.
Types of questions include:
* Finding main idea
* Finding word meaning in context
* Making inferences
* Identifying author’s purpose
* Recalling facts and details

6. Language Conventions 45 minutes to complete 58 questions
Examples of 2016 paper:
* Mum sighed with impatients.
* Suddenly he gave a sharp cry that startled us.
* Recognising adverbs, apostrophe of contraction, punctuation of direct speech, figurative language

7. Writing
40 minutes for students to complete a narrative or persuasive writing piece
The marking criterion consists of 10 elements.
Spelling, punctuation, character, setting, paragraphing, writing to engage the reader and developing ideas. ( elaboration)

8. How can you help your son?
Begin with a realistic and positive approach to NAPLaN
Be informed and familiar with the domains
Read the NAPLaN information brochure for parents and carer support
Set aside time for your son to attempt example NAPLaN tests and check against provided answers.

9. How can students prepare for NAPLaN?
Developing skills in literacy and numeracy is an ongoing process .
No need for excessive preparation, however, it’s important to be familiar with types of questions.
Do the example tests on the acara website and mark them using the answers provided.

10. Support at school
Opportunities to learn and develop skills are available to students in every class, every day.
Teachers have participated in a professional learning programme, with a focus on Literacy over the past three years. They are familiar with NAPLaN marking guidelines, reading strategies and explicitly teach writing skills.
Participation in the EMU project has supported student learning outcomes in numeracy.

11. Support at school
Students should use technology ( edmodo / google classroom) to connect with teachers: ask questions, submit an extended written response, past practice paper.
Maximise learning opportunities in the classroom: engage with set tasks, participate in class activities, be organised, act on teacher feedback and maintain a positive attitude towards learning.
