Maya Angelou By Hattie Zelenak

Biography Born on April 28, 1928 Born in St. Louis, Missouri
Won a scholarship to study dance and drama at San Francisco’s Labor School. Worked with Malcolm X and MLK.

Quote Context “Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean” She said this quote during the time of segregation. Maya Angelou was saying this about the Caucasian Americans that were treating black people with disrespect. The anger and hatred they had towards black people was affecting the whole population and it killed the lives of many.

Final Design

Question Review What are the symbolic motifs in my design and how do they relate to either the large theme of the quote, the biography of the person who said the quote or the context in which the quote was said? One of the symbolic motifs that is seen in the artist's design is the burning cross. The burning cross relates to the theme of the quote because it is symbolic of hate and bitterness. It can also be representative of 'burning it all clean'.  Another symbolic motif that is seen in my design is the Nazi symbol, which also relates to the theme of the quote, bitterness and hate. Which type of rhythm did you use in your design or did you use both types and why did you use rhythm the way you did? One example of rhythm found in the artist's artwork are the KKK members standing around the burning cross. This is an example of regularly repeating rhythm. Another example of rhythm are the swastikas that are in the top left corner. This is an example of randomly repeating rhythm. What is the focal point in your design, what techniques did you use to create it and why is it significant for the visual representation of your quote? The focal point of the artist's design is the burning cross. One technique that was used to make this the focal point was the Gaussian blur which draws the reader to the cross. This cross is very important to the design because it relates to the theme of the quote and represents bitterness and hate, as well as hate being like fire. How is the viewer supposed to move through the work? The viewer is supposed to move through the work from starting at the focal point, which is the burning KKK cross, to Malcolm X, to the KKK symbol and then to Martin Luther King Junior to the swastikas. How did you create closure in your work? The artist created closure in the design by the KKK members surrounding the burning cross. Another example of closure is the text that outlines the swastikas. The reader assumes these shapes, although it is not apparent in the design. What type of balance is used in your design? The balance used in this design is asymmetrical because it is not even on either side of the design.
