1 Brief introduction to the Injector MD days
H. Bartosik and G. Rumolo Injector MD days 23-24/03/2017

2 Injector MDs in 2016 General logistics: Different from 2015:
Requests made through the web interface Weekly blocks of dedicated MDs on Wednesdays (10h) except weeks of LHC MDs during LHC TS, replaced by 24h COLDEX runs Dedicated MDs in PSB or PS announced at FOMs to warn physics users Parallel MDs in all machines every day during working hours (and beyond, if requested) – one cycle in supercycle Every week, all requests received by Thursdays and MD programs for the following week published on Fridays Different from 2015: Proton MDs in SPS limited by TIDVG vacuum leak (see one of next slides) Ion injector complex started early to allow for more MD time LEIR included in the MD planning 10h blocks of dedicated MDs also during the p-Pb run mainly to allow for dedicated SPS MDs with ions for LIU

3 Injector MDs in 2016: overview
250h given for dedicated MDs (-20h from original plan) Two 24h COLDEX blocks (first one could not be used)

4 Impact of TIDVG restriction on MDs in 2016
Main impact on dedicated studies with LHC beams Longitudinal instabilities with bunch trains during acceleration (for LIU) 25 ns beams for high intensity studies Optimization of operational beam and pushing intensity limit Scrubbing beams (doublets) for SPS and LHC Minor impact on MDs with coasting beams Most MDs require anyhow only single bunches Limitations should be lifted in 2017 with new TIDVG, beam measurements required will be also discussed tomorrow afternoon

5 In general Lots of machine studies performed in 2016 have led to
Improved performance of currently operational beams Better beam quality for LHC and FT physics Loss reduction in all the machines (and reduced machine activation) A better understanding the performance limitations of future (e.g., LIU) beams and study of mitigation techniques Most of the planned MDs could be carried out The ion program could greatly benefit from the early start Main exception remains the SPS MDs with acceleration of bunch trains, e.g. on longitudinal coupled bunch instabilities (due to TIDVG limitation), instrumental for the LIU program  Need to be performed in 2017 Available MD time was sufficient in 2016 and at least the same level should be kept in 2017 to progress on the various fronts and accommodate additional requests, e.g.: All the MDs that could not be carried out in 2016 Ramp up of the crab cavity activities, BBLR compensation with wire Studies on limitations on FT beams for the PBC program

6 Motivations for the Injector MD days
Give a chance to the MD users to present their activities and show the progress made in 2016 Technical: Discuss results Logistic: Provide feedback to the MD coordinators on their general ‘MD experience’ (from request of MD time to practical execution of MD) Provide both the MD users and the OP crews with a general overview on the context and impact of all ongoing MD activities. Identify the outstanding open questions, consequently define and prioritize machine studies in the injectors for 2017 (covering operational beams, LIU, HL-LHC, PBC, other projects). Create the opportunity to collect/document the highlights of the 2016 MDs Discuss openly how to make best use of the MD time. Have main MD user express their wishes and see if/how OP teams can contribute to this 1) Since lots of progress was made in 2016 on several fronts, give a chance to the MD users to present their results. 2) Provide the MD users and the operations crews with an overview of all the ongoing activities, so that they can better understand the impact of their studies in the broader picture and how different questions should be prioritised. 3) Identify the open questions and consequently define - with priorities - a list of machine studies in the injectors for 2017 (covering the operational beams, LIU, HL-LHC, PBC, other projects). 4) Since the habit to post MD summaries after the MDs has been basically lost, create the opportunity to obtain short written reports from MD users and write a resume on the 2016 MDs and perspectives for 2017.

7 Two types of talks Talks from representatives of OP crews for each machine Does the present setting of MD coordination + execution work? What remains to be improved for the general satisfaction and efficiency: any suggestions, proposals? Talks from MD users Concise! Address context of each MD (e.g. LIU, HL-LHC, FT beams, operational development, etc.) + main goal(s) of the MD, results/lessons learnt in 2016, plans and requests for 2017 Include comments on number of MD hours used (vs. requested), efficiency of the MD time, level of satisfaction, main issues encountered (e.g. in terms of beam preparation, machine support or required instrumentation). Short MD notes expected from MD users Please make an effort and turn your slides into brief summaries to be uploaded on the Injector MD days Indico page by 30 April! Template (LaTeX) uploaded on Indico page, Yellow Report to be published We will also write up, document and publish the main points of the discussion and outcomes from the MD days! Including the MD status and priorities for 2017

8 Compact overview on the program
Thursday 23 March Friday 24 March Morning PSB + PSB-to-PS transfer + PS Scientific secretary: Alexander Huschauer SPS + Linac3 + LEIR Scientific secretary: Francesco Velotti Afternoon PS + PS-to-SPS transfer + SPS Scientific secretary: Alexandre Lasheen PS + SPS (ions only) Scientific secretary: Angela Saa Hernandez Friday afternoon we will also provide a short wrap up with all the main points discussed, open questions, emerged priorities for 2017 Thanks in advance to the scientific secretaries for helping us keep in line with the tight schedule and take notes of all items above We will also write up a summary of the event, to be included in the final report We will also write up, document and publish the main points of the discussion and outcomes from the MD days! Including the MD status and priorities for 2017

9 Many thanks to all MD users and OP crews for the successful execution of the wide MD program in 2016! Many thanks to BE/ABP and BE/OP for encouraging the execution and sponsoring the organisation of this event We hope the feedback received in these two days and the outcome in terms of MD notes + discussion will make this worth! Please note: Program is very packed, make sure you do not overrun your assigned time slot and you do leave enough time for discussion! Coffee and snacks are served at the designated breaks just in front of this Auditorium Buffet lunches (for those who signed up!) are served in the VIP room on first floor in this building
