5 Where do you stand? It’s up to employers to choose to work with us, they set the target lists We can convince employers to work with us, target lists can be influenced

6 Why do employers use a target list
Measure against objectives set for the year Driven by budgets, people/resources Subject areas – specialisms Geographical area Diversity & Social Mobility

7 How do we choose? Internal factors – existing cohorts, internal knowledge External factors – surveys, networks and relationships Opportunity Value added to support student development – What’s available Challenge – Resources – commitment is key Expectations – Employer, University and student Large target list = multiple activities

11 An unhealthy obsession?
I believe the metrics used to create this list are deeply flawed, it is merely an exercise in brand recognition and not based on experience of the schemes or availability of graduate roles It could be argued that many institutions focus too much attention on big brand employers that offer little return in terms of student outcomes. However, the equivalent university list has become a critical KPI for many institutions and a metric used by employers when choosing who to target. There are a number of great institutions that do not feature on this list where graduate recruiters could potentially become an employer of choice.

12 The other extreme Clearly a key source of opportunities and every university is rightly running specific schemes to support these employers Many employer engagement strategies focus almost exclusively on corporates or SME’s but are these where the biggest gains can be made?

13 I was shocked to discover that one of JLR's supply chain companies called Yazaki had 250,000 employees globally. Basically sometimes employers are much bigger than you imagine and even bigger than the company you know them as a supplier to. JLR have circa 35-40,000 permanent employees. Tata Technologies example

20 What questions could you ask an employer?

21 Questions for employer partners
What are your current recruitment challenges? Are there any specific areas where you have a growing requirement? What areas are you finding it hard to recruit for? Could we help you with these skills gaps? What has worked for you at other universities? How do you measure success with university partners? Do you have any data that you can share with us? How are we performing in relation to your other partners? Where could we improve? How has your recruitment process evolved since we last met? Which areas do our students typically fall down in the process? How could they be better prepared? What would ideal service look like to you? How can we make your life easier? What is the biggest challenge on the horizon for you? How will Brexit/Apprenticeship Levy impact for early careers strategy? Are there any other sites/functions/clients/suppliers that could benefit from our support?
