Mechanisms, resources and tools to track SDGs Nader KEYROUZ-Advisor SDG preparedness workshop Amman, May 8, 2016

2 Tracking levels There are four levels of monitoring and tracking SDGs
SDG preparedness workshop Tracking levels There are four levels of monitoring and tracking SDGs National level Regional level Global level Thematic level National reporting is the most significant level that relies on the work of NSOs The regional tracking will foster peer review and promote shared accountability for regional challenges and opportunities

3 Benefits of a tracking tool:
SDG preparedness workshop Benefits of a tracking tool: Guides decision-making and policies : To help users and decision makers filter, compare, and visualize at the region and country level SDGs and underlying targets according to international and national standards; and a platform to spot data gaps and to assist countries in prioritizing its capacity building Governance and transparency tool: The tracking tool will provide to users and decision makers data published by different sources at the national, regional, and international level. This will empower stakeholders by giving them an instrument with which they assess the progress made in implementing the SDGs, and with which they hold policy-makers to account for the final outcome.

4 SDG preparedness workshop
Users’ needs Aggregation of indicators by different levels: sex, age, etc. Quantifying and visualizing the interaction between SDGs indicators with other indicators at the global, regional, national, and subnational level Relationship between the newly proposed indicators by the SDGs frameworks and proxies Running periodical and systematic comparison of SDG data at the regional and sub-regional levels Composing new indicators Running simulations and projections Updated resources: news, publication, blogs, events Communication between users that have the same interests on the level of the Arab region Policy implications

5 Current status of SDG data on the portal
SDG preparedness workshop Current status of SDG data on the portal ADP database encloses many indicators that are listed within SDGs framework. The indicators in ADP database are currently categorized under 11 topics. Periodicity of data is limited to yearly indicators The country level is the lowest level of geographical aggregation (except urban/rural level of aggregation) The number and time series length of the indicators is higher on the international level than on the national level

6 Reporting current status of SDGs at the Arab level
SDG preparedness workshop Reporting current status of SDGs at the Arab level Currently SDGs at the global level are at their final stages Indicators are nearly finalized at the global level (by June/July 2016) Arab countries are moving at different paces in defining their national strategies Composition of national committee to develop SDG national strategy Selecting targets and indicators at the country level Developing implementation program, division of labor, source of finance… Information on SDGs and documentation is available on the SDGs knowledge platform managed by the UN-Department of Economic and Social affairs To date there is no dedicated platform that tracks the SDGs implementation at the Arab level

7 Mechanisms to track SDGs on the regional level
SDG preparedness workshop Mechanisms to track SDGs on the regional level Currently, ADP is visiting NSOs websites and collecting data After the selection of the SDGs indicators at the national level, NSOs will start publishing and reporting periodically their numbers ADP is already cooperating with national coordinators nominated by some NSOs and working on including all Arab countries. The coordination will focus on ensuring a synchronisation of published data on NSOs and ADP website ADP will try to gather to strengthen ties with other governmental agencies producing official data in relation with SDG and other topics published by the website. ADP is planning to improve mechanisms of data and metadata exchange with NSOs depending on their technical capacities (Excel files, SDMX…) ADP will organize a series of workshops to build capacity towards better dissemination of data in general and SDG in particular

8 Tools that ADP is planning to offer
SDG preparedness workshop Tools that ADP is planning to offer A dedicated page for SDGs indicators where users can visualize and export data A dynamic link will be created between the SDGs indicators and the available indicators on the portal The user can create and follow selected indicators using dashboards and alerts The user can use an advanced statistical tool to compute data gaps and make projections Dynamic map to visualize data and create scenarios

9 MDGs tracking tools. Building on previous experience
