Cloning IB Topic Presentation Morgan Kaplan and Hubza Syeda

2 Overview Definition Types
“A group of genetically identical organisms or a group of genetically identical cells derived from a single parent cell”* Types Plant Cloning Animal Cloning Therapeutic Reproductive *Definition from IB Study Guide

3 Plant Cloning Plants have been cloned naturally for hundreds of years
Ex. Strawberries and runner stems Cloning plants through vegetative propagation Tissue Culture Propagation Take piece of specialized root Break them up into root cells Leave cells in culture until dedifferentiation Stimulate calluses (unspecialized cells) to grow with hormones

4 Therapeutic Cloning Used to regenerate tissues, organs, or cells of organism Process Remove specialized cell (targeted body part) Eggs from new donor are taken and nuclei are removed Cells combined Induced growth New cells are inserted

5 The Therapeutic Cloning Debate
For Against Embryos have no nerve cells and cannot feel pain Can be used for regenerative therapies that save lives Can be removed from underdeveloped embryos that would die anyway Reduced risk of transplant rejection Every human embryo has a chance of life and should have the opportunity to develop More embryos produced than will be used so some will have to be discarded These pluripotent cells can become tumor cells Used embryo does not develop

6 Animal Reproductive Cloning
Somatic cell nucleus transfer (SCNT) Similar to therapeutic cloning Banned in many states and countries Embryo implanted into uterus (surrogate mother)
