Will people be more open to questions when different kinds of music are playing in the background? Peter Yoon, Tommy Schiller

2 “What you are listening to will make you more(or less) willing to talk about yourself”

3 Hypothesis: All kinds of music, regardless of genre, will influence people to be more open, and certain types of music will facilitate more “openness”. Open: the willingness to be asked questions, and the extent that they would respond by revealing personal matters

4 The Experiment 3 different locations School Cafe Street

And then ask for phone number/facebook etc

10 Street -Koreans were more “open” when music was not playing
Seoul, Korea Normal, Illinois Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 7 1 x 2 11 o 3 10 Aggressive Rap 8 5 Silence Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 3 1 12 o 2 8 x 9 Aggressive Rap 5 11 Silence 10 9.33 9.33 6.67 9.67 10.33 9 -Koreans were more “open” when music was not playing -not much overall difference between cultures -33% more wiling to give contact information in Korea when listening to classical music, 33% more when listening to Rap in the United States

11 Further Analysis Americans were more open to questions by an average of 17.2% Classical music more effective on Koreans, Rap had equal, if not greater, effect on Americans School culture allowed for highest openness, except on Korean streets People were more open in outside of school settings by relying on their “anonymity”. They were more frank because they planned on never meeting the experimenters again, and did not have to worry about their image few were willing to give contact information, a sign of a prolonged, continuous, relationship Music has different effects in different locations

12 Potential Flaws Not all groups of the population subject to interview

13 Significance of this Experiment
Helps better understand human behavior in not only physical surroundings, but also the auditory surroundings May help improve human interactions

14 Conclusion

15 All kinds of music, regardless of genre, will influence people to be more open, and certain types of music will facilitate more “openness” in different places.
