1 Colours By the end of this lesson we will be able to:
State that colours are divided into primary and secondary colours Explain that secondary colours are a mixture of primary colours Describe the effects of optical filters

2 Mind warm up! RED GREEN YELLOW RED PINK BROWN BLUE GREEN
Say the colours of the words underneath. RED GREEN YELLOW RED PINK BROWN BLUE GREEN BLUE BLACK YELLOW RED ORANGE PURPLE GREEN

3 What colours are these men?

4 What is the result of this operation?
4 + 5 = ? 2 + 8 = ?

5 This is an interactive Flash activity that works well on a whiteboard/tablet PC! With the goggles still on, get a learners with green goggles to drag the first man on the right along his green path to the green rectangle. Do the same with the other man choosing someone with red goggles to drag the man to the red rectangle. If the men hit a wall when they are dragged they go back to the beginning. The actions are a little temperamental, so have a go yourself before asking any kids to do it!

6 Are you confused? What is the colour of this background?

7 And what is the colour of this background?

8 Ok then, can you agree on something
Ok then, can you agree on something? What is the colour of this background?

9 When the teacher tells you, do what the instruction tells you to do!
Stand up and shout “Physics is great” Turn to the person next to you and say “Shhhh”

10 Primary and secondary Colours
There are three Primary Colours. These are RED, BLUE, GREEN. We can add these colour lights to produce the secondary colours. The secondary colours are YELLOW, MAGENTA, CYAN.

11 Filters If we shine white light on a colour filter, the light coming out of the filter is the same colour as the filter. Can you explain why? The filter will absorb all colours of light apart from the colour of the filter. E.g. a blue filter will absorb all the components of white light and allow blue light to go through. Only blue light goes through. The other components are absorbed White light made of the “7 colours” of the rainbow Blue filter

12 Coloured surfaces Why do surfaces look a particular colour then?
Complete the diagram by drawing the reflected colours The red surface allows only the red component of light to go through it, whereas the cyan surface allows only blue and green light to go through and our eyes see the combination of these as cyan.
