As Cold War tension built between the US and the Soviet Union, Khrushchev had nuclear missiles sent to Cuba-only 90 miles from the US President Kennedy went on TV and announced to Americans what the Soviets had done American were very nervous and scared. Many thought that nuclear war would happen The US Navy blockaded Cuba After tense discussions, the Soviets removed the Missiles and war was averted

4 SS5H8 a Vietnam War The US slowly became involved in helping South Vietnam fight against the Communist North By the early 1960s the US had become more involved The US Government believed that if the Communist took over the South, then it would spread in the region

5 Vietnam War In the mid 1960s President Johnson had the American people believing they were winning the war In 1968 the North launched a surprise attack on the Americans called the Tet Offensive, trying to drive the US out of the South Though the attack failed, it showed the American people that we weren't winning the war, and made people question why we were fighting in Vietnam

In 1975 the North and South were united under a communist government Americans, including soldiers and politicians, were divided on whether the US should have ever fought the war President Johnson’s popularity dropped because of his support of the war, and he eventually refused to run for another term
