2 Introduction CNS/ATM technology for oceanic and remote airspaces is very advanced but not in widespread use Many Airlines who invested in FANS-1/A capabilities have yet to see promised benefits largely because capable ground systems are not in place The FAA’s Advanced Technologies and Operational Procedures(ATOP) Program will bring advanced CNS/ATM infrastructure to US controlled oceanic airspace and deliver FANS-1/A benefits, especially in the Pacific Adacel’s Aurora CNS/ATM system will`provide the oceanic automation for ATOP

Prime contractor is Lockheed Martin Transportation and Security Solutions (LMTSS) Adacel is customizing its Aurora system software (the New Zealand OCS) to meet FAA requirements Adacel’s Aurora software provides FDP, conflict probe, display processing, ADS-A, CPDLC, AIDC, etc. LMTSS Micro-EARTS provides Radar and ADS-B Airways New Zealand provides training and procedures

CUSTOMERS The airlines are looking for the benefits of investing in FANS-1/A datalink technology. ATS providers have identified that while freeing up controllers to focus on meeting customer requirements is very important, safety is paramount. Automation can assume the function of identifying conflicts and free the controller to focus on solving them in a way that optimises service to the customer.

TRAFFIC VOLUMES AND MIX Air traffic had been growing constantly over the last 10 years. Separation standards are dependent on the CNS capability of the aircraft. ATS providers recognised that the ATM system would need to be able to process a variety of aircraft capabilities and separation standards.

VISION Progressive ATS providers share the airline vision that traditional procedural control and technology would be superseded, driven by customer requirements: Cost reduction, User Preferred Routes (UPR) and Dynamic Airborne Re-route Planning (DARP), Avoidance of delays, Responsive service orientated ATS providers.

9 ATM System Objectives More Efficient ATM Service: reduced separation minima, provide preferred routes and levels(including flex tracks and dynamic reroutes), improve data communications with CPDLC and AIDC Increased Controller Productivity: situation display to improve visualization of traffic, automated tools to increase speed and accuracy of separation calculations Highest Level of Safety: minimize manual tasks, automate conflict detection, flight plan conformance monitoring

23 ATM System Summary Many ATM systems provide controllers with:
CPDLC, ADS and AIDC, Tools to apply separation standards, And a whole lot of other features. But these tools are inadequate on their own to meet the vision of the airlines for flight optimization and safety. Automated conflict prediction and reporting capability is required to fully deliver FANS-1/A benefits

Los Angeles Fixed Track UPR / DARP Savings ~ 25mins This diagram demonstrates the Phases used in the South Pacific. Describe. Overall flight time savings averaging 25 minutes have been achieved. This is a huge benefit to airlines - especially when the flights are up to fifteen hours long and payload limited. The savings are even more significant because QANTAS fly across the Pacific 30 times per week. Specifically, the benefits are: no more refuelling diversions en-route, greater payload can be carried, reduced fuel and operating costs, increased city pair flying, and improved safety due to the improved accuracy, reliability and integrity of the avionics.
