Architectural scales Applications of technology

2 REVIEW How is scale defined in this class?
The size and proportion of one object compared to another object a device or tool used to measure or draw a dimension A dimension compared to a standard or common reference

3 RULER vs architecture scales
Talk amongst your neighbors while analyzing your RULER and architecture scale. Give at least two similarities and two differences between theM using the venn diagram in your notes.

4 Architectural scale An architectural scale is a physical tool used to measure and draw architectural drawings (site plans, floor plans, elevations, sections). architectural scales measure objects based on a system of twelve (12) units per foot.

5 Common architectural scales
3” = 1’-0” 1 ½” = 1’-0” Used for Detailed drawings

6 Common architectural scales
1” = 1’-0” ½” = 1’-0” Used for Detailed drawings

7 Examples of detail drawings

8 Examples of detail drawings

9 Common architectural scales
¼ ” = 1’-0” 1/8” = 1’-0” Used for floor plans, elevations, and sections

10 Examples of floor plans

11 Examples of elevations

12 Examples of elevations

13 Examples of sections Used for floor plans, elevations, and sections

14 Examples of sections

15 Common architectural scales
1/16” = 1’-0” 1/32” = 1’-0” This side of the scale also functions as a ruler. Used for site plans

16 Examples of a site plans

18 reading an architectural scale
Determine the scale to be used the line below has been draw to the scale ¼”=1’-0”. What side of the scale should we use to measure this line? Start measurements from the zero

19 reading an architectural scale
Space between the longer lines represents 1 foot in the real world

20 reading an architectural scale
What is the length of the line below? 20 feet

21 reading an architectural scale
What is the length of the line below? 8 feet

22 reading an architectural scale
What is the length of the line below? 13 feet

23 reading an architectural scale
What is the length of the line below? What should we do when we are measure an object with a dimension that is not an entire foot?

24 reading an architectural scale
How many lines do you see to the right of the zero? The space before the zero also equals 1 foot in its equivalent amount of inches There are twelve lines to the right of the zero. How many inches are in one foot? 12.

25 reading an architectural scale
2” 3” 6” 9” 10” 1” 11” 12” or 1’-0” There are twelve lines to the right of the zero. How many inches are in one foot? 12.

26 reading an architectural scale
What is the length of the line below? What should we do when we are measure an object with a dimension that is not an entire foot? Slide your scale to the nearest whole foot measurement and count the number of inches after the zero

27 reading an architectural scale
Determine the scale to be used the line below has been draw to the scale 1/8”=1’-0”. What is the measurement of this line? 28 feet

28 reading an architectural scale
What is the measurement of this line? 12 feet

29 reading an architectural scale
What is the measurement of this line? 15 feet

30 reading an architectural scale
What is the measurement of this line? 21 feet

31 reading an architectural scale
At 1/8”=1’-0”, how many lines are before the zero? How many inches does each space before the zero represent in the real world? 21 feet
