Can I prevent a heart attack? Risk factors for heart attack When a heart attack occurs: what do you do? Where can I learn more?

15 Heart Attack is the No. 1 cause of death in the U.S.
1. Heart disease 2. Cancer 3. Chronic lower respiratory diseases 4. Accidents (unintentional injuries) 5. Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases) 6. Alzheimer's disease 7. Diabetes 8. Influenza and Pneumonia 9. Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis 10. Intentional self-harm (suicide)

19 Prairie STAT Heart program is a standardized, well coordinated and integrated approach to treatment of adult patients presenting with a STEMI (Acute ST elevated myocardial infarction) at community hospitals without a cath lab to perform primary angioplasty, thereby expanding the reach of Primary PCI to these patients. STAT Heart program is a collaboration between Prairie Heart Cardiologist, SIH and community hospitals.

21 Prevention of Heart Attack
Prevention of heart disease is key to fighting this disease. Knowing your risk factors and how to change them is part of winning the battle against heart disease!!!

22 Can I Prevent a Heart Attack?
Control blood pressure Call 911 Can I Prevent a Heart Attack? Quit smoking Physical activity helps control B/P & high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity

23 Understand Risks Factors to Prevent Heart Attack
Major Risk Factors (can’t be changed) Increased age Male Heredity (including race) Major Modifiable Risk Factors (can modify, treat, or control) Tobacco smoke High blood cholesterol High B/P Physical inactivity Obesity & overweight Diabetes mellitus

24 When a Heart Attack Occurs: What Do You Do?

25 Calling 911 can make a difference!
In nearly all cases, it’s the fastest way for heart attack victims to get lifesaving treatment. EMS providers can begin diagnosis and treatment when they arrive on the scene, which can be up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the hospital by car.

26 What to do while waiting the few minutes for EMS to arrive?
Take 4 chewable baby aspirin (81 mg each) OR 1 regular aspirin (325 mg) immediately If you normally take daily aspirin, take an extra dose When EMS arrives Advise EMS personnel that you have taken aspirin Advise EMS personnel of allergies Some ambulance services have the capability to do an Electrocardiogram (EKG) when they arrive on-scene. In some systems this is used to alert the hospital that they have a heart attack on the way so that your treatment can move much faster when you arrive. Time Matters and Minutes count

27 EMS Early Activation EMS systems with 12 lead EKG capability participate in early activation. EMS (paramedics) are trained to interpret 12 lead EKG’s to recognize STEMI. Southern Illinois has several ambulance services that participate in EA of STEMI patients.
