2 What can you learn about why the cinema became so popular?
‘It was really an experience. You would be treated like a king or queen. You were issued into an enormous lobby of marble or gilt with huge stairways leading up to the balconies. All the carpets were at least an inch or two thick. Everything was done in there to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel very important.’

Why was cinema so popular? Until 1927 all movies were silent. Watch the clip from Charlie Chaplin and describe the key features of a silent movie (apart from the obvious lack of talking!) 3. Give examples of silent movies and also silent movie stars. (Use p of white text, p118 of orange) (For those in lesson also use the Purple text book p15-19) 4. Name 2 movie companies or studios 5. Describe how people were influenced by the big movie stars and the films. 6. What was the Hays Code? 7. How did the film industry develop after 1927? 8. Explain how the silent movie industry influenced American society?
